Este trabalho foi desenvolvido nos bairros de Benfica, Manguinhos, Bonsucesso e Ramos, subúrbios industriais do município do Rio de Janeiro, no período de 2000 a 2004, onde o IDH é de aproximadamente 0,8, com uma população de baixa renda, exposta à poluição veicular (próxima à Av. Brasil, uma das vias mais movimentadas do Rio de Janeiro) e industrial (refinarias, entre outras). O objetivo deste estudo é apresentar a relação de PTS ou MP, temperatura, umidade relativa do ar e óbitos por doenças cardiovasculares e respiratórias. Para tanto, foram desenvolvidos modelos estatísticos de séries temporais, além de uso do coeficiente de correlação de Pearson, da tendência e freqüência como instrumentos para a análise dos dados. Observou-se uma alta mortalidade por doença cardiovascular seguido da respiratória, bem como, exposição crônica de MP ou PTS, além de um pequeno processo de mudança no micro-clima da área. Apesar de não ter sido observado associação estatística de medidas de MP ou PTS, temperatura e umidade relativa do ar com óbitos por doenças cardiovasculares e respiratórias, acredita-se que as concentrações de MP ou PTS e a pequena mudança no micro-clima observado, possam ser fatores que contribuíram para isso, devido à alta ocorrência de óbitos nas faixas do Sensível (101-150ï?/m3) e Inadequado (151-200ï?/m3)segundo a tabela IQA-EPA.
