For Indonesian students, learning English is learning a second language. Learning a second language is not easy for students, including those at Pekalongan University. They often become bilingual learners, inserting Indonesian into English conversations. This happens when they are involved in class presentations. The aim of this study was to describe the type of code switching used by English students in class presentations. The research design was descriptive qualitative. The data included 15 utterances from the speaker of each group in the class presentations. It was found that there were three types of code switching used by English students in class presentations. These were intrasentential (26.6%), intersentential (40%) and extrasentential (33.3%). Among the three types above, intersentential was the type of code switching most used by English students. This study aimed to describe the English needs of the Economics Management Study Program of Pekalongan University based on the perception of the English lecturers. The research design of this research was descriptive qualitative. The total sample used was 2 English lecturers in the Economics Management study program. The research instrument used was a questionnaire with a measurement scale in the form of numbers. The research data was described through needs, real conditions in the classroom, and the desire of the lecturer. The real conditions of learning in the classroom become a basic guideline for achieving the learning objectives in the target needs. These results were also adjusted to the wishes (Wants). Thus, it could be seen that according to the lecturers 'perception, English was an ability that had to be mastered in order to fulfill the students' self-need to understand the economic context in using English. Moreover, understanding and mastering the material supported students to compete in the world of work. From the lecturers’ perspective, it was known that speaking ability was the most important ability to be owned by students, and the difficulties most often faced by students according to the lecturer was in listening skill.
Communication is a media in transferring idea between speaker and hearer. Oral communicationoften used by the speaker and hearer in achieving the aim of communication. Most of Indonesian people, included Pekalongan people are bilingual. They use Javanese language as their daily language. However, as Indonesian people, they also master and use Indonesian language in their conversation. Sometimes, they often mix Javanese and Indonesian in their conversation. It also happened in the conversation between seller and buyer in Pasar Grosir Setono Pekalongan. Most of the sellers came from Pekalongan. It means that in providing services for the buyer, sometimes the sellers combined Indonesian and Javanese language. They often inserted another language in their conversation. The aim of this research was to describe the form of code mixing used between seller and buyer in Pasar Grosir Setono Pekalongan. The research design used in this research was descriptive qualitative. The instrument was observation sheet. There are 15 sellers and 17 buyers used as the sample in this research. The technique of analyzing data used in this research were identification, classification and interpretation. The finding of this research shows the form of code mixing used by the sellers and buyers in Pasar Grosir Setono Pekalongan were from Javanese to Indonesian and Indonesian to Javanese. From those code mixing, there were the type of intra-sentential and intra-lexical used in their utterances. Based on the existing result, it is necessary to have language training in the field of marketing. It is used to improve the seller’s competence in speaking using Indonesian language and improve their confident to speak using Indonesian language.Keywords: Code mixing, conversation, bilingual
