We demonstrate that a homogeneous spin polarization in one-dimensional structures of finite length in the presence of Bychkov-Rashba spin-orbit coupling decays spontaneously toward a persistent spin helix. The analysis of formation of spin helical state is presented within a novel approach based on a mapping of spin drift-diffusion equations into a heat equation for a complex field. Such a strikingly different and simple method allows generating robust spin structures whose properties can be tuned by the strength of the spin orbit interaction and/or structure's length. We generalize our results for two-dimensional case predicting formation of persistent spin helix in two-dimensional channels from homogeneous spin polarization.
This study presents a new two-stage hybrid optimization algorithm for scheduling the power consumption of households that have distributed energy generation and storage. In the first stage, non-identical home energy management systems (HEMSs) are modeled. HEMS may contain distributed generation systems (DGS) such as PV and wind turbines, distributed storage systems (DSS) such as electric vehicle (EV), and batteries. HEMS organizes the controllable appliances considering user preferences, amount of energy generated/stored and electricity price. A group of optimum consumption schedules for each HEMS is calculated by a Genetic Algorithm (GA). In the second stage, a neighborhood energy management system (NEMS) is established based on Bayesian Game (BG). In this game, HEMSs are players and their pre-determined optimal schedules are their actions. NEMS regulates the total power fluctuations by allowing the energy transfer among households. In the proposed algorithm, HEMS decreases the electricity cost of the users, while NEMS flats the load curve of the neighborhood to prevent overloading of the distribution transformer. The proposed HEMS and NEMS models are implemented from scratch. A survey of 250 participants was conducted to determine user habits. The results of the survey and the proposed system were compared. In conclusion, the proposed hybrid energy management system saves power by up to 25% and decreases cost by 8.7% on average.
Shor's quantum algorithm is very important for cryptography, since it can factor large numbers much faster than classical algorithms. In this study, we implement a simulator for Shor's quantum algorithm on graphic processor units (GPU) and compare our results with Liquid -which is Microsoft quantum simulation platform-and two classical CPU-implementations. We evaluate 10 benchmarks for comparing our GPU implementation with Liquid and single-core implementation. The analysis shows that GPU vector operations is more suitable for Shor's quantum algorithm. Our GPU kernel function is compute-bound, due to all threads in a block reach to the same element of the state vector. Our implementation has 52.5× speedup over single-core algorithm and 20.5× speedup over Liquid.I.
Stuffed pasta (manti) is one of the famous and nutritious traditional foods produced and consumed in Turkey. Traditional foods are special products having some cultural aspects of specific regions of countries. In addition to home-made traditional production, industrial production of manti has increased in recent years. Industrial production of manti using various techniques is likely to result in some risks or modifications in terms of its sensory and microbiological features. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine quality properties of manti samples produced by sole or combined applications of infrared (IR) and ultraviolet-C (UV-C) radiations and vacuum drying as compared to the traditional oven drying method. With this aim, some food-borne pathogens (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhimurium and Listeria monocytogenes) were inoculated into the manti recipe prior to the production. Afterwards, the samples were dried with 17 different IR, UV-C and vacuum drying combinations, including the traditional oven drying method. In addition to the, total microorganisms and food-borne pathogens, some chemical analyses like Thiobarbituric acid (TBA) measurement as an indicator of lipid oxidation was also studied. In the results, application of 500 W IR drying method produced satisfactory results in terms of microbiological quality. Again, a bar-type IR drying method at constant temperature (150 ºC) seems to be a promising drying method for the industrial manti production. In conclusion, it might be suggested that IR drying method can be an alternative to the conventional method in industrial manti production.
