Purpose This paper aims to compare perceptions of Islamic bank customers concerning FinTech services in Malaysia and Saudi Arabia. It also investigates the level to which customers are willing to adapt FinTech services. Design/methodology/approach Primary data was collected from May to September 2019 using a questionnaire to survey 102 Islamic bank customers in Malaysia and 147 in Saudi Arabia. The data are analyzed based on Structural Equation Modelling using the partial least squares approach. Findings The findings show that knowledge, attitude and subjective norms are the highly significant determining factors that influence customers’ opinions on adapting to new technology, but awareness demonstrates only a moderately positive effect. Moreover, the impact of these factors on the intention to adopt FinTech services significantly differs between Malaysian and Saudi Arabian customers. Originality/value This is an original study based on primary data on customers of Islamic banking in Malaysia and Saudi Arabia. It provides some novel insights into how the banking industry can boost customers’ confidence and enhance their patronage by adopting FinTech in their business operation model. These findings should be of value to senior management, policymakers and regulators in the banking industry in both Muslim and non-Muslim countries.
Access to adequate resource or income, leading a healthy life; and being educated are major components of human development. However, satisfying these components remains a major challenge facing many societies today. Some of the key hindrances to development initiatives are injustice and abuse of fundamental social and economic rights as reflected in the low human development indices of many countries. Conventionally, human development is measured in terms of education, income, and health. Nonetheless, the model does not take cognizance of other integral components of development such as social justice and human rights. Thus, this paper tries to fill this gap in the current literature by incorporating social justice and human rights (exogenous) and three contextualized factors, namely education, health, and income (endogenous) into the human development model based on the Maqasid Sharī'ah framework. The paper uses document analysis and library based data, whereby both primary and secondary sources are collated. The model proposes that the
Purpose - This paper examines the mediating effect of positive attitude (ATT) and subjective norm (SJN) on customers’ behavioral intention to participate in Islamic banking in Nigeria using the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) as a basis.Design/methodology/approach - Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire with 274 samples. This study used the convenience sampling technique.Findings – The authors found a positive and significant relationship between the factors in the model. The findings highlight the relevance of attitude in the structural model. The findings further show that attitude has a positive effect in mediating the relationship between awareness, knowledge, religion and the behavioural intention of customers.Originality/value - This paper highlights the need for policymakers, regulators and Islamic banking operators to create proper awareness through effective communication with customers on the benefits of Islamic banking and the provision of a platform for knowledge enhancement to promote a positive attitude among the different segments of society and which in turn can influence their intention to participate in Islamic banking.
Purpose This paper aims to examine the basic determinant factors of human development using the theory of Maqasid al Shari’ah (TMS). It also identifies relevant demographic variables that may likely moderate the relationship among the identified factors. Design/methodology/approach An in-depth review of the TMS and human capital theory literature was conducted, with a specific attention on their impact to human development. Findings The extensive review of the relevant literature shows that human development is not only determined by education, health, income, human rights and social justice but also influenced by some demographic variables like educational attainment and gender composition. Originality/value This paper is a novel attempt whereby an extensive review on the factors of human development is conducted using TMS and identifying the narrowness in the existing framework. The paper will help researchers to better their understanding in this context. It will also provide the policymakers with adequate information on the important factors of human development with the aim to chart a comprehensive policy direction.
