O objetivo dessa revisão de literatura foi reunir artigos e literaturas acerca de megaesôfago canino, abordando de uma forma solida e clara essa afecção, a fim de que os médicos veterinários tenham um referencial teórico conciso sobre tal patologia. O megaesôfago é um distúrbio de motilidade esofágica podendo ser de causa primária ou secundária, sendo a regurgitação o principal aspecto clínico. Os animais em sua maioria apresentam regurgitações logo após a alimentação e quando não diagnosticado e tratados evoluem para um emagrecimento progressivo e desnutrição, os sinais respiratórios são frequentes em função da pneumonia aspirativa decorrente da hipomotilidade esofágica. O diagnóstico é feito por meio dos exames de imagem em associação com os sinais clínicos e a anamnese, o prognostico é reservado visto que o tratamento conservador nem sempre é efetivo.
O objetivo deste trabalho foi realizar uma revisão de literatura sobre os princípios gerais da ortodontia em cães, a fim de fornecer uma referência para veterinários interessados neste tipo de tratamento. O atendimento odontológico é necessário para proporcionar uma boa saúde e melhorar a qualidade de vida dos animais, pois as doenças da cavidade oral não tratadas são dolorosas e podem contribuir para doenças locais e sistêmicas. A razão de qualquer tratamento ortodôntico em animais é aliviar a dor da má oclusão e restaurar a função dos dentes, não sendo realizada por motivos estéticos. A escolha do método de tratamento deve ser baseada na idade e temperamento do cão, no custo do tratamento, na capacidade do dono de aderir ao protocolo de tratamento como mentor e na habilidade e conhecimento do dentista veterinário em usar o aparelho e metodologia adequada para cada caso. Considera-se que uma oclusão dentária normal é fundamental para a saúde e conforto do animal. As má-oclusões podem ter origem hereditária ou adquirida e seu diagnóstico deve ser feito o mais cedo possível, para isso a cooperação do tutor é fundamental para atingir os resultados desejados.
