В настоящее время ономастика в целом и ее отрасль топонимика-наука, изучающая географические названия, переживают некоторый подъём. Изучение топонимов-междисциплинарное направление, которым занимаются представители различных отраслей научного знания: филологии, этнографии, истории, географии, социологии, литературоведения и др. Исследованиям этимологии географических понятий и объектов в Ростовской области в большей степени посвящены работы лингвистов и историков, в то время как географы в меньшей степени вовлечены в данный процесс, несмотря на широкое пространство для деятельности. Авторы представленного исследования, основываясь на топонимических изысканиях специалистов различных отраслей науки, приводят классификацию гидронимов Нижнего Дона через изучение пространственных особенностей их распределения. В качестве методологической основы работы использовались этимологический и семантический методы, методы сравнительного анализа и зонирование территории. В процессе исследования была собрана и проанализирована широкая база гидронимов Ростовской области (свыше 350 наименований водных объектов рассматриваемой территории). Результатом работы стала семантическая классификация гидронимов рассматриваемой территории. Данная классификация основана на лингвистических закономерностях образования и развития географического названия как единицы языковой системы с учётом пространственной компоненты исследования. По мнению авторов, классификация имеет потенциал для дальнейшего развития и уточнения дополнительных подкатегорий. Она может использоваться как географами в качестве вспомогательного инструмента для изучения истории развития и освоения регионов, культурного ландшафта территории, взаимосвязей между природными и социальными процессами, так и специалистами смежных направлений, занимающихся изучением топонимов.
