By means of the Eysenck Personality Inventory and a careful interview it proved possible to predict the outcome of surgery for duodenal ulcer as far as patient satisfaction was concerned. Success was accurately predicted in 20 out of 22 cases and failure was accurately predicted in 8 out of 10 cases.
SummaryOral glucose tolerance after either partial gastrectomy or vagotomy and pyloroplasty for duodenal ulcer was markedly affected by posture. Peak blood glucoses and the degree of reactive hypoglycaemia were greater in the erect than in the supine position. This is probably due to positional changes in gastric emptying, and our findings support the view that after gastric surgery alteration in gastric emptying rate is the main factor responsible for the change in oral glucose tolerance.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
