La litología es uno de los condicionantes principales de la composición y organización espacial de los componentes de la fracción sólida del suelo, aspecto especialmente determinante de la respuesta hidrológica superficial. A pesar de esta evidencia, los aspectos litológicos son habitualmente obviados en los trabajos de caracterización del comportamiento hidrológico superficial, lo cual supone desaprovechar información de base trascendente y de relativamente fácil obtención. Con la finalidad de corregir esta disfunción metodológica, en este trabajo se identifican y caracterizan los litotipos asociados a cada una de las parcelas establecidas en la Comunidad de Madrid, dentro del Inventario Nacional de Erosión de Suelos (INES), y se analizan las posibles relaciones que existen entre éstos y diferentes propiedades edáficas, relacionadas con la porosidad, y en consecuencia, que condicionan el comportamiento superficial y subsuperficial del agua en los sistemas naturales. Los resultados obtenidos identifican relaciones significativas y coherentes, que posibilitan hacer aproximaciones apropiadas a propiedades edáficas a partir de la información litológica. Estas relaciones pueden suplir de forma práctica la habitual carencia de información edáfica específica, facilitando su integración en trabajos que necesiten de la aplicación de metodologías de caracterización hidrológica del territorio
