Aside from the commonly known white rice lines, colored varieties also exist. These varieties have historically been used in Chinese medicine. Anthocyanins, a large group of natural polyphenols existing in a variety of daily fruits and vegetables, have been widely recognized as cancer chemopreventive agents. The primary objective of cancer treatment strategies has traditionally focused on preventing the occurrence of metastasis. In this research the antimetastatic mechanism of anthocyanins on the invasion/migration of human oral CAL 27 cells was performed using a transwell to quantify the migratory potential of CAL 27 cells and the results show that anthocyanins can inhibit the in vitro migration and invasion of CAL 27 cancer cells. In addition, the gelatin zymography assay indicated that anthocyanins inhibited the activity of matrix metalloproteinases-2 (MMP-2). Western blotting assay also demonstrated that anthocyanins inhibited the associated protein expression of migration/invasion of CAL 27 cell. Immunofluorescence staining proved that anthocyanins inhibited nuclear factor kappa B p65 (NF-κB p65) expressions. These results demonstrated that anthocyanins from a species of black rice (selected purple glutinous indica rice cultivated at Asia University) could suppress CAL 27 cell metastasis by reduction of MMP-2, MMP-9, and NF-κB p65 expression through the suppression of PI3K/Akt pathway and inhibition of NF-κB levels.

The cyprinid genus Onychostoma Günther, 1896 consists of 24 valid species distributed in Southeast Asia, including Taiwan, Hainan, mainland China and the Indochina region. In the present study, we determined the complete mitochondrial genome of O. lepturum, which is 16,598 bp in length, containing 13 protein-coding genes, two rRNA genes, 22 tRNA genes and a typical control region (D-loop). To verify the molecular phylogeny of the subfamily Acrossocheilinae, we provide new insights to better understand the taxonomic status of Acrossocheilus, Onychostoma and Folifer brevifilis. The phylogenetic trees presented three major clades based on the 13 protein-coding genes from 28 Acrossocheilinae species. Clades I and II represent the Onychostoma and Acrossocheilus groups, respectively. Species of Acrossocheilus, Onychostoma and F. brevifilis are included in Clade III, which is considered as an ancestral group. This work provides genomic variation information and improves our understanding of the Acrossocheilinae mitogenome, which will be most valuable in providing new insights for phylogenetic analysis and population genetics research.

Oceanic currents, biological traits, and geological evidence from historical climate change have shaped the distribution of genetic diversity and demographic history in Macrobrachium japonicum. In this study, we investigated the phylogeographic structures and demographic history of M. japonicum in Taiwan and the Ryukyu Islands by the partial mitochondrial COI gene. The topology of the haplotype minimum-spanning network revealed a star-like structure, which suggested a recent range expansion. With the apparent lack of strong dispersal barriers to gene flow between ocean basins, amphidromous prawns, as marine organisms with larvae of high dispersal abilities, are generally expected to show genetic homogeneity. Divergence data suggested that M. japonicum populations diverged 0.462 ± 0.164 myr. Complex patterns of asymmetrical gene flow indicate that variation in dispersal ability is affected by the dominant Kuroshio Current systems of the Pacific Ocean. Analysis of its demographic history revealed that M. japonicum underwent a decline in size following a recent population expansion based on ABC analysis. Bayesian skyline plot analyses of all populations indicated that the expansion of M. japonicum was estimated to have occurred in 175 Kya and that the effective population size rapidly increased by approximately 50 Kya. The results of this study may offer both practical and theoretical value for the further study of conservation genetics, management, and sustainable resource utilization.
