AbstractThe Basement complex of Nigeria is polycyclic and retains memories of events dating back to about 3000 m.y. As in other parts of Africa, it suffered its most pronounced deformation and remobflisation during the Pan African Orogeny (about 650---450 m.y. ago).A review of the geology of this terrain is presented following recent field and geechronological data. It is also shown that the basement may have participated in the 1300--900 m. y. Kibaran Orogeny. In addition, an attempt is made at discussing the evolution of the Precambrian rocks in Nigeria and the conclusion is made that most of the rocks evolved by ensialic rather than plate tectonic processes.
R~sum6Le complexe du soubassement nig6rien est polycyclique, et porte ]a marque d'6v6ne-ments remontant a 3.000 millions d'ann6es. I1 a subi sa d6formation et sa remobilisation les plus marqu6es, comme ce fur le cas dans le reste du continent Africain, au cours de l'orog6nie Pan Africaine, c-a-d il y a entre 650---450 millions d'ann6es.Dans ce travail, nous pr6sentons la g6ologie de ce terrain d'apr6s des donn6es cartographiques et g6ochronologiques r6centes. Nous d6montrons 6galement que ce soubassement peut tr6s bien avoir particip6 h l'orog6nie kibarienne d'il y a 1.3000 ~ 900 millions d'ann6es.En outre, nous essayons de discuter l'6volution de roches pr6cambriennes de la Nig6rie, et nous en tirons la conclusion que pour Ia plupart des roches, cette 6volution r6pond une formation ensialique plutSt qu'~t des processus de tectonique de plaques.
