Of 132 psychiatric inpatients tested for human immunodeficiency virus type 1 antibody seropositivity, 41.7% (10/24) of intravenous drug abusers, 11.4% (8/70) of alcohol and/or nonintravenous drug abusers, and 2.6% (1/38) of nonabusers showed seropositivity, indicating a fourfold increase in the seropositivity among alcohol/non‐intravenous drug abusers compared with nonabusers. This difference, however, did not reach the level of statistical significance.
