The relationship between maternal TG levels and infant birth weight may depend on dietary grain intake and stages of pregnancy in Korean pregnant women.
Primary malignant melanoma in breast parenchyma (PMB) is an extremely rare disease, and the most common presentation is a palpable breast lump. To the best of our knowledge, a case of PMB presenting as a breast abscess has not been reported in English literatures. We present a case of PMB that manifested as a recurrent breast abscess in a 71-year-old woman. On MRI, an enhancing solid mass with a cystic or necrotic portion was revealed with some high signal intensities on precontrast-enhanced T1-weighted images and a dark rim on T2-weighed images. The MRI features played a pivotal role in identifying the underlying malignant condition and making an accurate diagnosis of this rare case of PMB with unusual clinical presentation.
Folate deficiency and elevated serum C‐reactive protein (CRP) concentration in pregnant women is known to be related to adverse pregnancy outcomes, but relationship between serum folate and CRP levels not has been explored. In 480 pregnant women of 12‐28 weeks of gestation, the association between serum levels of folate and CRP was evaluated. Dietary intake data was collected by the semiquantitative food frequency method for usual intake over one year prior to pregnancy and 24‐hour recall method for the intake one day before blood sampling. Serum folate and CRP levels were analyzed by the radioimmunoassay and high sensitivity immuno‐turbidimetirc assay, respectively. Maternal serum folate at parturition was positively correlated with folate intake during pregnancy (p<0.05). Maternal serum folate during pregnancy (p<0.05) and at parturition (p<0.01) was negatively correlated with serum CRP at parturition. Further studies are warranted to explore the mechanisms underlying the associations between serum folate and CRP levels, and also the implications of these results in relation to adverse pregnancy outcomes. This work was supported by the Ministry of Environment and the 2nd stage of Brain Korea 21 project in 2008
Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are not uncommon and often cause gastrointestinal bleeding. GISTs occurring in the small intestine are occasionally difficult to identify by endoscopy and CT. In this case, the patient underwent CT three times before surgery, and the lesion was found to be located in a different area of the abdominal cavity on each CT scan. Moreover, the lesion was missed in the first two CT images because it was difficult to distinguish it from the nearby collapsed small intestine. The lesion was eventually detected through angiography; however, the correct diagnosis and treatment were delayed for 3 years because it was mistaken for a vascular malformation, which is the most common cause of obscure GI bleeding in elderly patients. This report emphasizes the need for interventional radiologists to be updated and vigilant of the angiographic features of GISTs to make an accurate diagnosis and establish a management strategy.
The relationship of neonatal birth weight with maternal serum triglyceride (TG) level has been reported. This hospital‐based cohort study examined the relationship between maternal dietary intake and serum lipid levels in relation to neonatal births weights in 460 pregnant women and their babies. Maternal serum TG and HDL‐cholesterol (HDL‐C) were correlated with intakes of food and nutrients such as cereals and cereal products, meat and meat products, carbohydrates, and polyunsaturated fatty acid. After controlling for maternal age, babies' sex, income and history of low birth weight, the adjusted odds ratio of low birth weight (<2.5kg) delivery was 6.1 (95% confidence intervals, 1.202‐30.707) in women with below the median serum TG level at parturition. The adjusted odds ratio of macrosomia (=4kg) delivery was 0.4 (95% confidence intervals, 0.133‐0.931) in women with above the median serum HDL‐C level. We suggest that maternal lipid levels at parturition of which dietary intake may have partial contribution throughout the pregnancy is associated with birth weight.*This work was supported by the Ministry of Environment and the 2nd stage of Brain Korea 21 project in 2008
