A B S T R A C TPhytochromes are the best characterized and most frequently studied plant photoreceptors. A plethora of studies have revealed important roles for phytochromes in plant development, and more recently, evidence indicates that these photoreceptors also modulate responses to a multitude of abiotic and biotic stresses. Thus, the present work aimed to investigate whether tomato phytochromes phyA, phyB1 and phyB2 are involved with responses to low water potential (polyethylene glycol 6000 at Ψ w of −0.3 MPa), high salinity (100 mM NaCl), cadmium contamination (65 mM CdCl 2 ), high temperature (42°C for six hours during three days) and ultraviolet B radiation (UV-B − 280-320 nm for eight hours during three days) stresses. For this purpose, seedlings of tomato mutants impacted by phytochrome A (fri), phytochrome B1 (tri) and phytochrome B2 (phyB2) were subjected to abiotic stresses and evaluated for their growth, pigment and osmoprotectant accumulation and lipid peroxidation. Under the conditions of this study, the results did not shown large variations of phyA mutant when compared to the wild genotype. However, the tomato phytochromes B1 and B2 mainly act as negative regulators of growth, pigment maintenance and osmoprotectant accumulation during responses to the different abiotic stresses.
Agriculture accounts for ~ 70% of all water use and the world population is increasing annually; soon more people will need to be fed, while also using less water. The use of plant-associated bacteria (PAB) is an eco-friendly alternative that can increase crop water use efficiency. This work aimed to study the effect of some PAB on increasing soybean tolerance to drought stress, the mechanisms of the drought tolerance process, and the effect of the PAB on promoting plant growth and on the biocontrol of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. PAB were isolated from soybean rhizosphere and S. sclerotiorum sclerotia. The strains identified as UFGS1 (Bacillus subtilis), UFGS2 (Bacillus thuringiensis), UFGRB2 and UFGRB3 (Bacillus cereus) were selected on their ability to grow in media with reduced water activity. Soybean plants were inoculated with the PAB and evaluated for growth promotion, physiological and molecular parameters, after drought stress. Under drought stress, UFGS2 and UFGRB2 sustained potential quantum efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm), while a decrease was found in the control plants. Moreover, UFGS2 and UFGRB3 maintained the photosynthetic rates in non-stressed conditions compared to the control. UFGS2-treated plants showed a higher stomatal conductance and higher transpiration than the control, after drought stress. Some PAB-treated plants also had other beneficial phenotypes, such as increases in fresh and dried biomass relative to the control. Differential gene expression analysis of genes involved in plant stress pathways shows changes in expression in PAB-treated plants. Results from this study suggest that PAB can mitigate drought stress in soybean and may improve water efficiency under certain conditions.
In addition to mediating photomorphogenesis, phytochromes are responsible for many abiotic stress responses, acting upon biochemical and molecular mechanisms of cell signaling. In this work, we measured the physiological and biochemical responses of phytochromemutant plants under water stress. In tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.), the aurea mutant (au) is phytochromedeficient and the high-pigment-1 mutant (hp1) has exaggerated light responses. We examined the effects of water withholding on water potential, leaf gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence, chloroplast pigment content and antioxidant enzyme activity in au and hp1 and their wildtype cultivar Micro-Tom (MT). Initial fluorescence and potential quantum efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) photochemistry were not affected by the treatment, but effective quantum yield of PSII, electron transport rate decreased and non-photochemical quenching increased significantly in MT. Under water withholding conditions, MT had higher malondialdehyde concentration than the mutants, but au had higher activities of catalase and ascorbate peroxidase compared to the other genotypes. The tolerance of mutants to the effects of water withholding may be explained by the higher activity of antioxidant enzymes in au and by a higher concentration of antioxidant compounds, such as carotenoids, in hp1.
ABSTRACT. Mathematical models were tested to correlate the leaf area index (LAI) of maize to the percentage of light intercepted by the canopy (% LIC) and this with the total dry matter of aerial parts (TDM), as well with the grain yield (GY). The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design, with four replications. The treatments consisted of hybrid maize at five plant densities: 4.0, 2.66, 2.0, 1.6, and 1. ) and GY behaved similarly. The LAI grew exponentially with the plant density. For all ages of plants, the exponential model fit well with the % LIC values according to the LAI and also fit well to the data of dry mass as a function of % LIC. GY depending on the density fit well to quadratic, exponential straight line and logarithm-modified equations, and the number of cobs per plant depending on the density fit well to hyperbolic and exponential-modified equations. Keywords: age, corn, radiation, yield.
