Background: Previous research findings from Project Active Teen demonstrated the effectiveness of high school conceptual physical education (CPE) in promoting active lifestyles. Method: This study followed Project Active Teen participants 20 years after graduation from high school and 24 years after taking a CPE class. Physical activity behaviors were assessed using the same procedures as previous Project Active Teen studies. Activity patterns were compared with patterns while in high school and shortly after high school graduation. Activity patterns were also compared with a national sample of age-equivalent adults. Results: Twenty years after high school graduation, former CPE students were less likely to be inactive and more likely to be moderately active than when in high school and were less likely to be inactive and more likely to be moderately active than national sample age-equivalent peers. They were typically not more vigorously physically active than comparison groups. Conclusion: Results support the long-term effectiveness of CPE in reducing inactive behavior and promoting moderate physical activity later in life.
Background: Environmental provisions can boost students’ discretionary participation in physical activity (PA) during lunchtime at school. This study investigated the effectiveness of providing PA equipment as an environmental intervention on middle school students’ PA levels and stakeholders’ perceptions of the effectiveness of equipment provisions during school lunch recess. Methods: A baseline–intervention research design was used in this study with a first baseline phase followed by an intervention phase (ie, equipment provision phase). A total of 514 students at 2 middle schools (school 1 and school 2) in a rural area of the western United States were observed directly using the System for Observing Play and Leisure Activity in Youth instrument. Interviews were conducted with stakeholders. Paired-sample t tests and visual analysis were conducted to explore differences in PA levels by gender, and common comparison (with trustworthiness measures) was used with the interview data. Results: The overall percentage of moderate to vigorous PA levels was increased in both schools (ranging from 8.0% to 24.0%). In school 2, there was a significant difference in seventh- and eighth-grade students’ moderate to vigorous PA levels from the baseline. Three major themes were identified: (1) unmotivated, (2) unequipped, and (3) unquestionable changes (with students becoming more active). Conclusions: Environmental supports (access, equipment, and supervision) significantly and positively influenced middle school students’ lunchtime PA levels.

The effectiveness of the model on badminton skill development has been demonstrated by previous literature (Hastie et al., 2011). Along with the skill development, cognitive outcomes (e.g., sport-specific knowledge) are considered to be important parts of one’s performance in sports. Cognition of ‘how to play’ in a sport is associated with improved performances (Thomas & Thomas, 1994). Therefore, teaching sport knowledge is important to enhance the effectiveness of practice and gameplay. Thomas and Thomas (1994) described the three concepts of sport knowledge in performance: (a) declarative (factual information, such as rules), (b) procedural (techniques and tactics), and (c) strategic knowledge (knowing how to learn). Given that the nature of sport knowledge has great potential to be developed for all levels of players (Dexter, 1999), it is important to dive into diverse ways to boost students’ cognitive learning while playing sports in physical education. Using advanced video technology, such as motion analysis mobile applications (Apps) with a feature of live capture for instant feedback, may enhance cognitive learning outcomes in physical education. Video technology has grown rapidly to support learning in physical education over the past decades (Palao et al., 2015; Rikli & Smith, 1980; van Wieringen et al., 1989). However, little is known about the effectiveness of a motion analysis App on students’ sport knowledge enhancement in sport education. Therefore, the App-based feedback was examined to identify its effectiveness on students’ sport knowledge enhancement during sport education badminton season. The purpose of the present study was to assess the effectiveness of a sport education curriculum model in improving self-esteem and state sport competency. Students in the sport education group reported significant pre- to post-intervention increases in self-esteem, but not in the state sport competence. The results could be interpreted by Vealey’s (1986) recommendations that the state sport competence is hypothesized to be positively related to performance orientation primarily focused in general college physical activity class, and negatively related to outcome orientation which is a core element of the SEM. However, self-esteem is positively related to outcome orientation (e.g., feelings of success, accomplishment, belongings, team affiliation, and formal competition). Similar to Wallhead and Ntoumanis’ (2004) study, although a primary goal of sport education is to develop competence in sport (Siedentop, 1994), implementation of the course SEM may indirectly affect the SEM’s potential for developing student skill. The lack of significant improvement in the sport education student’s state sport competence might be due to the relatively short duration of the intervention and fewer opportunities for students to practice skills in badminton that is easy to play but hard to master. Further research is required to examine the potential effect on student skill development and perceptions of competence in the sport education courses.
