Aim:The experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of supplementing different levels of protein and energy sources on blood biochemical profiles of Brahman crossbred cattle.Materials and Methods:The study consisted of two experiments in Brahman crossbred cattle in An Giang Province. In trial 1, 28 cattle of 178±12.5 kg were arranged in a completely randomized block design. In the second trial, another 24 cattle of 182±14.3 kg were allocated in a 2 × 3 factorial design. The experiments lasted for 90 days. Blood samples were taken at the end of the experiments, and plasma concentrations of metabolites and enzymes were analyzed by an automated biochemical analyzer (Humalyzer 3000, USA).Results:The glucose concentration was highest at 1.83 mmol/L when supplemented with urea (60 g/head/d). Urea and creatinine content was not significantly different between treatments when cattle were supplemented with different protein and energy sources. In the treatment with 360 g/head/d soybean meal supplementation, cholesterol concentration was lowest (2.50 mmol/L), compared with the highest concentration (3.86 mmol/L) in the treatment with soybean meal at 720 g/head/day. The total protein concentration showed the highest values at 94.5 g/L and 96.3 g/L when supplemented with soybean meal (720 g/head/day) and fish oil, respectively.Conclusion:There were slightly altered blood biochemical profiles among cattle at different protein and energy source supplements.
Aim: This study was conducted to identify the diversity of feather color and to determine the relationship between plumage color and egg yield as well as eggshell patterns and internal egg quality traits of Japanese quails. Materials and Methods: For investigating phenotypic diversity, a total of 600 quails from five breeding farms were evaluated to record head feather, shank, and plumage color. An on-station experiment was also conducted on 360 laying quails to examine the relationship between plumage color and egg production and egg weight during 24 weeks of laying. Eggs collected during this period were also used for identifying eggshell patterns and examining their relationship with internal egg quality characteristics. Results: Plumage color was primarily wild-type, with the highest proportion being 56.3% (p<0.001). Brown color was also found at a relatively high proportion in the population (16.7%), followed by black color (11.3%). The egg production and laying rate of quails with wild-type and brown plumage colors also significantly (p=0.001) differed from those of quails with other plumage types. Egg weight was also higher in these quail groups, especially than that of quails with yellow plumage color. Four patterns of eggshell were identified, among which spotted and dark eggshells were predominant (45.2% and 43.1%, respectively); however, patterns did not affect internal egg quality characteristics. Conclusion: Plumage color was primarily wild-type in both male and female quails. Egg yield over a 24-week laying period was superior in quails with wild-type and brown plumage colors, whereas a relationship between eggshell patterns and egg quality traits could not be established.
The GPE− strain is a live attenuated vaccine for classical swine fever (CSF) developed in Japan. In the context of increasing attention for the differentiating infected from vaccinated animals (DIVA) concept, the achievement of CSF eradication with the GPE− proposes it as a preferable backbone for a recombinant CSF marker vaccine. While its infectious cDNA clone, vGPE−, is well characterized, 10 amino acid substitutions were recognized in the genome, compared to the original GPE− vaccine seed. To clarify the GPE− seed availability, this study aimed to generate and characterize a clone possessing the identical amino acid sequence to the GPE− seed. The attempt resulted in the loss of the infectious GPE− seed clone production due to the impaired replication by an amino acid substitution in the viral polymerase NS5B. Accordingly, replication-competent GPE− seed variant clones were produced. Although they were mostly restricted to propagate in the tonsils of pigs, similarly to vGPE−, their type I interferon-inducing capacity was significantly lower than that of vGPE−. Taken together, vGPE− mainly retains ideal properties for the CSF vaccine, compared with the seed variants, and is probably useful in the development of a CSF marker vaccine.
Salmonella is recognized worldwide as an important foodborne and human zoonotic pathogen. Salmonellosis is a significant public health problem because of the high burden of this disease in terms of morbidity and mortality in developing countries (WHO, 2015) and the presence of various animal reservoirs (Gopinath et al., 2012).Non-typhoidal Salmonella had the greatest impact on human health in Africa, Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe (WHO, 2015). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, USA) estimates Salmonella causes more than 1.2 million illnesses, resulting in more than 23,000 hospitalizations and 450 deaths in the United States every year (CDC, 2014). Human salmonellosis was found in 0.6% to 7% of the total of human diarrhoea cases in Southeast Asian countries such as Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam (Bordier & Francois, 2013;Ly et al., 2010). Salmonella Typhimurium and Salmonella Enteritidis are known as the most typical human pathogens (Herikstad et al., 2002) and the predominant serovars of human salmonellosis in developed countries (Hendriksen et al., 2011). In contrast, SalmonellaWeltevreden is known to be the predominant serovar of human salmonellosis (from 6.1% to 12.5%) in Southeast Asian
Though recently considered a therapeutic treatment for commercial broilers, little is known about the effects of bacteriophages on native, slow-growing birds. This study evaluated their efficacy against Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium infected Noi chicken, a native Vietnamese broiler breed. In total, 420 birds were used in a completely randomized design consisting of seven treatments and four replicates of 15 birds. The treatments were NC (negative control), PC (positive control, S. Typhimurium challenged); NC+B1 and NC+B2 (negative control plus B1 or B2 bacteriophage, respectively); PC+B1, PC+B2 (positive control plus B1 or B2 bacteriophage, respectively) and PC+B1B2 (positive control plus both B1 and B2 bacteriophages). After four weeks of infection, the mortality rate in the PC group was 51.1% compared with 11.1% in the PC+B1B2 treatment. Bacteriophage administration had resulted in increased weight gain and decreased feed conversion ratio, particularly when both phages were included in the treatment (p<0.001). Moreover, the relative percentage of carcass weight was lowest in the PC treatment (66.9%) (p<0.001), whereas the other treatments registered similar carcass weight values. Regarding the internal organs, liver weight percentage was higher in the non-treated Salmonella group, and enlarged spleens were also noted in infected chickens even when treated with bacteriophages. The correlation between phage administration and blood parameters was unclear. Although the use of two bacteriophages for therapy was determined to be preferable for the majority of the criteria examined, further genetic characterization of the phages will be required before they can be widely used in chicken farms.
