Das Titelbild zeigt die Anordnung von Rutheniumatomen im aktiven Zentrum von Rutheniumkatalysatoren für die Ammoniaksynthese: drei Rutheniumatome in einer Ebene (blaue Kugeln) und zwei weitere in einer darüber befindlichen (rote Kugeln). Bei dieser Geometrie steht keines der Rutheniumatome mit beiden Stickstoffatomen des adsorbierten N 2 -Moleküls (grüne Kugeln) in Kontakt, weshalb diese Anordnung energetisch begünstigt ist. Basierend auf der Kenntnis dieses aktiven Zentrums von unpromotiertem Ru/MgO wurden ausgehend von [Ru 3 (CO) 12 ] mehrere Katalysatoren präpariert (obere grüne Kugel), charakterisiert (linke rote Kugel sowie TEMAufnahme im Hintergrund), in einem parallelisierten Screening-Verfahren hinsichtlich ihrer katalytischen Eigenschaften untersucht (linke und untere blaue Kugel) und kinetisch analysiert (rechte blaue Kugel). Es resultierte mit dem Barium-promotierten Ru/MgO-Katalysator eines der aktivsten bekannten Systeme für die Ammoniaksynthese (rechte rote Kugel). Die Befunde führten zu dem Schluss, dass das B 5 -Zentrum auch bei den promotierten Katalysatoren die Aktivität maûgeblich bestimmt (untere grüne Kugel). Das enorme katalytische Potential des Ba-Ru/MgO-Katalysators wird von Muhler et al. auf S. 1093 ff. beschrieben.
