Computed tomography (CT) can provide a 3D view of the patient's internal organs, facilitating disease diagnosis, but it incurs more radiation dose to a patient and a CT scanner is much more cost prohibitive than an X-ray machine too. Traditional CT reconstruction methods require hundreds of X-ray projections through a full rotational scan of the body, which cannot be performed on a typical X-ray machine. In this work, we propose to reconstruct CT from two orthogonal X-rays using the generative adversarial network (GAN) framework. A specially designed generator network is exploited to increase data dimension from 2D (X-rays) to 3D (CT), which is not addressed in previous research of GAN. A novel feature fusion method is proposed to combine information from two X-rays. The mean squared error (MSE) loss and adversarial loss are combined to train the generator, resulting in a high-quality CT volume both visually and quantitatively. Extensive experiments on a publicly available chest CT dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. It could be a nice enhancement of a low-cost X-ray machine to provide physicians a CT-like 3D volume in several niche applications.

Existing enhancement methods are empirically expected to help the high-level end computer vision task: however, that is observed to not always be the case in practice. We focus on object or face detection in poor visibility enhancements caused by bad weathers (haze, rain) and low light conditions. To provide a more thorough examination and fair comparison, we introduce three benchmark sets collected in real-world hazy, rainy, and lowlight conditions, respectively, with annotated objects/faces. We launched the UG 2+ challenge Track 2 competition in IEEE CVPR 2019, aiming to evoke a comprehensive discussion and exploration about whether and how low-level vision techniques can benefit the high-level automatic visual recognition in various scenarios. To our best knowledge, this is the first and currently largest effort of its kind. Baseline results by cascading existing enhancement and detection models are reported, indicating the highly challenging nature of our new data as well as the large room for further technical innovations. Thanks to a large participation from the research community, we are able to analyze representative team solutions, striving to better identify the strengths and limitations of existing mindsets as well as the future directions.Index Terms-Poor visibility environment, object detection, face detection, haze, rain, low-light conditions *The first two authors Wenhan Yang and Ye Yuan contributed equally. A growing number of algorithms have been proposed to map a scalar time series into ordinal partition transition networks. However, most observable phenomena in the empirical sciences are of a multivariate nature. We construct ordinal partition transition networks for multivariate time series. This approach yields weighted directed networks representing the pattern transition properties of time series in velocity space, which hence provides dynamic insights of the underling system. Furthermore, we propose a measure of entropy to characterize ordinal partition transition dynamics, which is sensitive to capturing the possible local geometric changes of phase space trajectories. We demonstrate the applicability of pattern transition networks to capture phase coherence to non-coherence transitions, and to characterize paths to phase synchronizations. Therefore, we conclude that the ordinal partition transition network approach provides complementary insight to the traditional symbolic analysis of nonlinear multivariate time series.

We propose to construct cross and joint ordinal pattern transition networks from multivariate time series for two coupled systems, where synchronizations are often present. In particular, we focus on phase synchronization, which is one of prototypical scenarios in dynamical systems. We systematically show that cross and joint ordinal patterns transition networks are sensitive to phase synchronization. Furthermore, we find that some particular missing ordinal patterns play crucial roles in forming the detailed structures in the parameter space whereas the calculations of permutation entropy measures often do not. We conclude that cross and joint ordinal partition transition network approaches provide complementary insights to the traditional symbolic analysis of synchronization transitions.

Residential load forecasting is important for many entities in the electricity market, but the load profile of single residence shows more volatilities and uncertainties. Due to the difficulty in producing reliable point forecasts, probabilistic load forecasting becomes more popular as a result of catching the volatility and uncertainty by intervals, density, or quantiles. In this paper, we propose a unified quantile regression deep neural network with time-cognition for tackling this challenging issue. At first, a convolutional neural network with multiscale convolution is devised for extracting more behavioral features from the historical load sequence. In addition, a novel periodical coding method marks the model to enhance its ability of capturing regular load pattern. Then, features generated from both subnetworks are fused and fed into the forecasting model with an end-to-end manner. Besides, a globally differentiable quantile loss function constrains the whole network for training. At last, forecasts of multiple quantiles are directly generated in one shot. With ablation experiments, the proposed model achieved the best results in the AQS, AACE, and inversion error, and especially the average of the AACE is grown by 34.71%, 75.22%, and 32.44% compared with QGBRT, QCNN, and QLSTM, respectively, indicating that our method has excellent reliability and robustness rather than the state-of-the-art models obviously. Meanwhile, great performances of efficient time response demonstrate that our proposed work has promising prospects in practical applications.
