China has been experiencing fine particle (i.e., aerodynamic diameters ≤ 2.5 µm; PM2.5) pollution and acid rain in recent decades, which exert adverse impacts on human health and the ecosystem. Recently, ammonia (i.e., NH3) emission reduction has been proposed as a strategic option to mitigate haze pollution. However, atmospheric NH3 is also closely bound to nitrogen deposition and acid rain, and comprehensive impacts of NH3 emission control are still poorly understood in China. In this study, by integrating a chemical transport model with a high-resolution NH3 emission inventory, we find that NH3 emission abatement can mitigate PM2.5 pollution and nitrogen deposition but would worsen acid rain in China. Quantitatively, a 50% reduction in NH3 emissions achievable by improving agricultural management, along with a targeted emission reduction (15%) for sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, can alleviate PM2.5 pollution by 11−17% primarily by suppressing ammonium nitrate formation. Meanwhile, nitrogen deposition is estimated to decrease by 34%, with the area exceeding the critical load shrinking from 17% to 9% of China’s terrestrial land. Nevertheless, this NH3 reduction would significantly aggravate precipitation acidification, with a decrease of as much as 1.0 unit in rainfall pH and a corresponding substantial increase in areas with heavy acid rain. An economic evaluation demonstrates that the worsened acid rain would partly offset the total economic benefit from improved air quality and less nitrogen deposition. After considering the costs of abatement options, we propose a region-specific strategy for multipollutant controls that will benefit human and ecosystem health.

China is one of the regions with highest PM concentration in the world. In this study, we review the spatio-temporal distribution of PM mass concentration and components in China and the effect of control measures on PM concentrations. Annual averaged PM concentrations in Central-Eastern China reached over 100μgm, in some regions even over 150μgm. In 2013, only 4.1% of the cities attained the annual average standard of 35μgm. Aitken mode particles tend to dominate the total particle number concentration. Depending on the location and time of the year, new particle formation (NPF) has been observed to take place between about 10 and 60% of the days. In most locations, NPF was less frequent at high PM mass loadings. The secondary inorganic particles (i.e., sulfate, nitrate and ammonium) ranked the highest fraction among the PM species, followed by organic matters (OM), crustal species and element carbon (EC), which accounted for 6-50%, 15-51%, 5-41% and 2-12% of PM, respectively. In response to serious particulate matter pollution, China has taken aggressive steps to improve air quality in the last decade. As a result, the national emissions of primary PM, sulfur dioxide (SO), and nitrogen oxides (NO) have been decreasing since 2005, 2006, and 2011, respectively. The emission control policies implemented in the last decade could result in noticeable reduction in PM concentrations, contributing to the decreasing PM trends observed in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. However, the control policies issued before 2010 are insufficient to improve PM air quality notably in future. An optimal mix of energy-saving and end-of-pipe control measures should be implemented, more ambitious control policies for NMVOC and NH should be enforced, and special control measures in winter should be applied. 40-70% emissions should be cut off to attain PM standard.

Developing anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts with high catalytic activities is of great importance for effective water splitting. Compared with the water‐oxidation electrocatalysts that are commonly utilized in alkaline conditions, the ones operating efficiently under neutral or near neutral conditions are more environmentally friendly with less corrosion issues. This review starts with a brief introduction of OER, the importance of OER in mild‐pH media, as well as the fundamentals and performance parameters of OER electrocatalysts. Then, recent progress of the rational design of electrocatalysts for OER in mild‐pH conditions is discussed. The chemical structures or components, synthetic approaches, and catalytic performances of the OER catalysts will be reviewed. Some interesting insights into the catalytic mechanism are also included and discussed. It concludes with a brief outlook on the possible remaining challenges and future trends of neutral or near‐neutral OER electrocatalysts. It hopefully provides the readers with a distinct perspective of the history, present, and future of OER electrocatalysts at mild conditions.

The Haber−Bosch process for industrial NH 3 production suffers from harsh reaction conditions and serious CO 2 emission. Electrochemical N 2 reduction offers a carbon-neutral alternative for more energy-saving NH 3 synthesis but requires active electrocatalysts for the N 2 reduction reaction (NRR). In this Letter, boron nanosheet (BNS) is proposed as an elemental two-dimensional (2D) material to effectively catalyze the NRR toward NH 3 synthesis with excellent selectivity. When tested in 0.1 M Na 2 SO 4 , such BNS catalyst attains a high Faradaic efficiency of 4.04% and a large NH 3 yield of 13.22 μg h −1 mg cat −1 at −0.80 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode, with strong electrochemical durability. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the B atoms of both oxidized and H-deactivated BNS can catalyze the NRR more effectively than clean BNS, and the rate-determining step is the desorption process of the second NH 3 gas.

Sulfur-doped graphene (S-G) is superior for electrocatalytic ambient N2-to-NH3 fixation, offering a remarkably large NH3 yield of 27.3 μg h−1 mgcat.−1 and a high Faradaic efficiency of 11.5% at −0.6 and −0.5 V vs. a reversible hydrogen electrode, respectively, in 0.1 M HCl.

Producing ammonia (NH3) by electrocatalytic N2 fixation is a promising and environmentally friendly strategy, in comparison to the Haber–Bosch process with high consumption of energy and CO2 emissions. Because of the extremely high bond energy, it is indispensable to explore valid catalysts to activate the triple bond. In this paper, Cr-doped CeO2 nanorods are developed to serve as non-noble-metal electrocatalysts for an electrocatalytic N2 reduction reaction. Introducing Cr into the catalyst leads to an increase of the oxygen vacancies. In a 0.1 M Na2SO4 solution, the Cr0.1CeO2 nanorods achieve a high Faradaic efficiency (3.84%) and a large NH3 yield (16.82 μg h–1 mgcat. –1) at −0.7 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. The Cr0.1CeO2 nanorods also exhibit high stability during the reaction.

MnO2 with oxygen vacancies nanoarray on Ti mesh (MnOx/TM) is active for N2-to-NH3 conversion, achieving a large NH3 yield of 1.63 × 10−10 mol cm−2 s−1 and a high Faradaic efficiency of 11.40% in 0.1 M Na2SO4.

Currently, industrial-scale NH 3 production almost relies on energy-intensive Haber-Bosch process from atmospheric N 2 with large amount of CO 2 emission, while low-cost and high-efficient catalysts are demanded for the N 2 reduction reaction (NRR). In this study, Mn 3 O 4 nanoparticles@reduced graphene oxide (Mn 3 O 4 @rGO) composite is reported as an efficient NRR electrocatalyst with excellent selectivity for NH 3 formation. In 0.1 M Na 2 SO 4 solution, such catalyst obtains a NH 3 yield of 17.4 µg•h −1 •mg −1 cat. and a Faradaic efficiency of 3.52% at −0.85 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode. Notably, it also shows high electrochemical stability during electrolysis process. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations also demonstrate that the (112) planes of Mn 3 O 4 possess superior NRR activity.
