Leisure plays an important role in everyone ' s lives and allows individuals to enhance social interactions, improve personal identity, develop social acceptance, and increase physical and psychological development. However, many people with disabilities do not have access to a full range of leisure opportunities. Therefore, as a first analysis, this paper reviews background information about inclusion and segregation in communities. A second analysis is undertaken to examine the meaning of disability expressed in social contexts, because little is known about the meaning of disability, the social contexts in which those meanings occur, and how those meanings influence inclusion. Finally, issues of identity formation and leisure involvement are addressed. Given that positions on separate and inclusive leisure options differ, offering both provides people with the opportunity to select the option that is best for individuals with disability. The implications of the benefits on inclusion and segregation are discussed.
