Soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) with black seed coats and green cotyledons are rich in anthocyanins and chlorophylls known as functional nutrients, antioxidants and compounds with anticarcinogenic properties. Understanding the genetic diversity of germplasm is important to determine effective strategies for improving the economic traits of these soybeans. We aimed to analyze the genetic diversity of 470 soybean accessions by 6K single nucleotide polymorphic loci to determine genetic architecture of the soybeans with black seed coats and green cotyledons. We found soybeans with black seed coats and green cotyledons showed narrow genetic variability in South Korea. The genotypic frequency of the d1d2 and psbM variants for green cotyledon indicated that soybean collections from Korea were intermingled with soybean accessions from Japan and China. Regarding the chlorophyll content, the nuclear gene variant pair d1d2 produced significantly higher chlorophyll a content than that of chloroplast genome psbM variants. Among the soybean accessions in this study, flower color plays an important role in the anthocyanin composition of seed coats. We provide 36 accessions as a core collection representing 99.5% of the genetic diversity from the total accessions used in this study to show potential as useful breeding materials for cultivars with black seed coats and green cotyledons.
-The aim of this field experiment was to investigate the possible effects of mepiquat chloride (TE) and trinexapac-ethyl (MC) on oil composition, seed yield and endogenous gibberellins content of flax cultivar. Foliar application of plant growth retardants mepiquat chloride (0.897, 1.794 and 2.691 kg a.i. ha -1 ) and trinexapac-ethyl (0.756, 1.512 and 2.668 kg a.i. ha -1 ) had significantly increased seeds ripening rate and seed yield. In contrast, plant height was decreased by foliar application of MC and TE. The application of MC significantly increased seed oil yield (730 kg ha -1 by 27.0%) compared to the control. Seed and oil yield, and unsaturated fatty acids (oleic acid, linoleic acid and linolenic acid) were increased by foliar application of MC.
Understanding plant morphological and seed characteristics is an essential step for the utilization of genetic resources to improve targeted traits in soybean breeding programs. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the agronomic traits and seed pigments of 469 black soybean germplasms with green cotyledons to identify useful resources using multivariate analyses, correlation, principal component analysis (PCA), and cluster analyses. The results showed that the range of flowering days from planting were 37.7-71.5 days, harvesting days from planting were 112.3-153.0 days, plant height was 49.6-151.6 cm, and 100-seed weight was 9.1-49.3 g. According to the correlation analyses with agronomic traits, flowering and harvesting days were positively correlated with the plant height, number of nodes, and number of branches. Additionally, it was found that the chlorophyll a and total chlorophyll content had the greatest effect on the green color of the cotyledon. Based on the PCA, 13 quantitative traits were compressed into three components. The first three principal components accounted for 82.5% of the total variance. In this study, black soybean germplasms with green cotyledons were divided into four clusters by the K-means cluster analysis (non-hierarchical procedure), based on the PCA. The cluster analysis showed that chlorophyll a and plant height had a significant effect on the clustering of the black soybean germplasms used in this study. This study provides opportunities to easily select useful genetic resources for the development of new black soybean cultivars.
-The survival rate and thermal, crystal, and physicochemical properties of starches in chinese yam tubers irradiated to proton beam were determined. Survival rate was decreased with increased proton beam irradiation. Amylose content of D. opposita starches from different proton beam ranged from 13.2% to 17.8%. D. opposita starch at 5 Gy showed the highest ΔHgel values (12.0 J/g) while D. opposita starch at 25 Gy showed the lowest values (10.1 J/g). Several parameters such as PKV (peak viscosity), HPV (Hot peak viscosity) and CPV (Cooling peak viscosity) decreased with the increase in irradiation dose. The degrees of crystallinity of the D. opposita starches at 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 Gy were 37.2, 38.3, 38.9, 39.2 and 39.9%, respectively. It might be deduced that proton beam irradiation causes changes of starch, especially at high dose irradiation.
-Influences of different seeding dates on growth, seed yield, fatty acid composition and oil content were investigated in flax plants for two years. The results indicated that plant height in early seeding date was higher than that of delayed seeding dates during first season. Furthermore, seeding date also significantly affected the ripened seed rate and the rate increased with the delay in seeding date in first season. Seed yield in the first crop season was significantly higher than the second crop season. Palmitic acid showed variation in different seeding dates. Contrarily, stearic acid was stable and did not changed by different seeding dates. Linolenic acid was found in highest amount in all seeding dates consecutively in two cropping years. Highest oil content was recovered from the seeds of flax sown at 29 Apr. and May 9 in first and second cropping year respectively.
