Abstract-In this paper a novel numerical optimization technique for antenna configurations is introduced. This algorithm is inspired from colonizing weeds, which is shown to be very robust and adaptive to changes in the environment. Thus, capturing their properties would lead to a powerful optimization algorithm. The feasibility, efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm for optimization of antenna problems are examined by a set of antenna configurations. The obtained results are compared with a particle swarm optimization technique which is widely used in antenna optimization. Numerical results show that there is a good agreement between the corresponding results.

1 Abstract-The use of uniaxial anisotropic materials in rectangular dielectric resonator antennas (DRA) increases the radiation from their side walls compared to their top walls due to the fundamental radiating mode, which leads to the improvement of boresight directivity. The different boundary conditions on the walls of DRA are also investigated. The main phenomenon of gain enhancement is also theoretically explained. The proposed method is validated by comparing the simulation results for the cases of isotropic and anisotropic DRAs. The measured results for an aperture-coupled uniaxial anisotropic DRA show an impedance bandwidth of 20.65% between 3.17 and 3.9 GHz and a peak broadside gain of 8.4 dB.
