Mechanical finite element analyses of welded structures are performed on a daily basis in the automotive industry. One objective is to estimate the fatigue strength, which for thin sheet structures is given mainly by the strength of the joints. This article gives some insight into the dimensioning process, with special focus on fatigue analysis of spot welds and seam welds in thin‐walled car body structures made of steel. Experiences from daily use at Volvo Car Corporation, limitations of methods, future and on‐going work are discussed.
This article outlines the development of pier protection against ship collision over the last 25 years. The calculation of impact forces is developed from general formulas for equivalent loads, based on collision tests, to numerical FEM simulations. Comparisons between the results are given. Examples of the structural protection of 18 bridges are described.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
