travers l'examen de fragments architecturaux constitutifs de Banteay Kdei pouvant être considérés comme des matériaux de réemploi, cette étude cherche à apporter un éclairage nouveau sur la question, soulevée notamment par Finot et Cœdès, d'un éventuel monument antérieur à Banteay Kdei construit sur le site du temple actuel ou dans ses environs immédiats. L'analyse montre que dans l'état actuel des recherches, on ne trouve sur la plupart des pièces pouvant être considérées comme des matériaux de réemploi nul indice probant qui permettrait d'affirmer qu'elles proviendraient d'un tel monument. Elles semblent plutôt provenir de bâtiments de construction tardive édifiés pendant la période de travaux d'adjonction de Banteay Kdei. Reste que les pièces PD-24, 25, 26 et les pièces portant l'inscription K. 532 datée du Xe siècle, appartenant toutes à l'édifice Nord Dl 1 , suggèrent l'existence d'un monument antérieur rattachable au Xe siècle. Il faudrait alors considérer qu'il s'agissait d'un monument en briques comme on en voit de nombreux exemplaires datant du Xe siècle aux alentours de Banteay Kdei. En effet, dans les monuments khmers en briques, l'emploi de grès est limité et cela pourrait expliquer un réemploi restreint de matériaux de grès dans les édifices actuels.
