A well-controlled anionic polymerization of 4-diphenylaminostyrene (DAS) with alkyllithium (RLi) has been achieved for the first time. The nucleophilicity and solubility of RLi, 4-diphenylaminostyryllithium (DASLi), and poly(4-diphenylaminostyryl)lithium (PDASLi) were very important controlling factors. An initiator system of tert-butyllithium (t-BuLi)/N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) in toluene was found to be very effective. In this system, the t-BuLi/TMEDA complex reacts with toluene to form the benzyllithium (BzLi)/ TMEDA complex, and this complex initiates the anionic polymerization of DAS. The DASLi/TMEDA and PDASLi/TMEDA complexes have sufficient nucleophilicity and stability as propagating species, without the metalation of toluene, and as a result, living anionic polymerization was achieved. The high molecular weight poly(4-diphenylaminostyrene) (PDAS), synthesized using the RLi/TMEDA system, had a syndiotactic-rich configuration, independent of the polymerization solvent.

A novel class of carbazole polymers, nitrogen‐linked poly(2,7‐carbazole)s, was synthesized by polycondensation between two bifunctional monomers using the palladium‐catalyzed amination reaction. The polymers were characterized by 1H NMR, Infrared, Gel permeation chromatography, and MALDI‐TOF MS and it was revealed that the combination of the monomer structures is important for producing high molecular weight polymers. Thermal analysis indicated a good thermal stability with high glass transition temperatures, e.g., 138 °C for the higher molecular weight polymer P2. To pursue the application possibilities of these polymers, their optical properties and energy levels were investigated by UV‐Vis absorption and fluorescence spectra as well as their electrochemical characteristics. Although the blue light emission was indeed observed for all polymers in solution, the quantum yields were very low and the solid films were not fluorescent. On the other hand, the HOMO levels of the polymers estimated from the onset potentials for the first oxidation in the solid thin films were relatively high in the range of −5.12 to −5.20 eV. Therefore, light emitting diodes employing these polymers as a hole‐transport layer and iridium(III) complex as a triplet emitter were fabricated. The device of the nitrogen‐linked poly(2,7‐carbazole) P3 with p,p′‐biphenyl spacer, which has a higher HOMO level and a higher molecular weight, showed a much better performance than the device of P2 with m‐phenylene spacer. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Thin films were deposited from low molecular weight polytetrafluoroethylene source materials by an ionization-assisted evaporation method, and their crystallinity and molecular orientation were studied by x-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy. The film properties were largely influenced by the substrate temperature and the molecular weight of the source material. At lower substrate temperatures, the molecules were oriented with the chain axis parallel to the substrate surface, and the film had preferential crystal orientation with the (100) plane of the hexagonal structure parallel to the substrate. With increasing substrate temperature, the molecules lost parallel orientation and the film crystallinity decreased. Such changes took place upon increasing the substrate temperature from 180 to 240 °C when deposited from a source material with a molecular weight of 8500, and from room temperature to 130 °C when the source molecular weight was 1500.

Vinyl polymer thin films having carbazole units were prepared by a new method combining physical vapor deposition and self-assembled monolayer (SAM) techniques. 3-(N-carbazolyl)propyl acrylate monomer was evaporated onto a gold substrate that had a VAZO 56 (DuPont) initiator attached as a SAM. The VAZO initiator was activated by irradiating ultraviolet light after depositing the monomer. Although the polymerization reaction can proceed even without the surface initiator, the SAM was effective in improving the surface smoothness, thermal stability, and film-substrate adhesion as a consequence of the formation of covalent chemical bonds between the film and the substrate. Thermal activation of the initiator was examined for the deposition polymerization of 9-H-carbazole-9-ethylmethacryrate. Substrate heating during the evaporation was not effective for accumulating thin films. On the other hand, performing postdeposition annealing on the film after deposition at room temperature resulted in the formation of a polymer thin film chemically bound to the substrate.
