This paper is designed to divulge some tests found in books, articles and international technical standards, by means of which it is possible to evaluate the performance of reference electrode widely used in potentiometric and voltammetric methods. The reference potential (Eref), junction resistance (Rj), the ability of keeping up the potential when current is flowing (polarizability), and of generating junction potentials (Ej) are applied to some commercial electrodes. The results obtained are amply discussed and some corrective procedures are suggested when the electrode fails.Keywords: reference electrode; quality tests.

INTRODUÇÃOOs eletrodos de referência e de trabalho usados em potenciometria e voltametria precisam encontrar-se em condições tais que sobre eles não haja qualquer suspeita quando estiverem operando. Apesar da importância de avaliar, manter e recuperar eletrodos, os fabricantes pouco ou nada têm feito para instruir, de modo correto, os usuários, que, mesmo usando intensivamente os eletrodos, não têm referenciais de qualidade aplicáveis a estes dispositivos. Se um eletrodo aparentemente não funciona de modo adequado, em muitos casos, atendendo aos ditames da moderna sociedade de consumo,é descartado e substituído por outro novo.Num esforço, diametralmente oposto, de "desvelar das caixaspretas", testes de desempenho têm sido desenvolvidos e publicados em livros, artigos e normas técnicas estrangeiras [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] . A maior parte destes testes é de fácil execução pelos usuários e, em conjunto, constituem uma base comum através da qual podem ser confrontados os desempenhos de eletrodos similares. No âmbito industrial, ou nos laboratórios onde eletrodos são utilizados intensivamente, a realização sistemática destes testes pode indicar o momento propício para fazer a manutenção ou providenciar a substituição do eletrodo. Na pesquisa em eletroquímica, a perfeita caracterização de um novo sistema de referência pode ser alcançada pela aplicação destas medições. Este artigo apresenta quatro testes muito úteis para a avaliação dos eletrodos de referência: O potencial de referência (Eref), a resistência de junção (Rj), o potencial de junção (Ej) e a polarizabilidade. Há outros ainda 1 , mas estes quatro são os mais importantes, posto que diretamente ligados à qualidade do eletrodo.O eletrodo de referência responde por cerca de 80% dos problemas nas medições potenciométricas 1 . Nos sistemas voltamé-tricos, eletrodos de referência defeituosos podem acarretar desde voltamogramas irregulares, até a completa destruição da superfície do eletrodo de trabalho quando, sem o valor de referência garantido durante a varredura, os potenciais fornecidos pelo potenciostato tornam-se desgovernadamente altos.
