American children of Mexican parentage were found to have consistently lower mean IQ scores than the American children of white non-Mexican parentage. In view of certain uncontrolled environmental factors no final statement of the relative native superiority can be made. The adequacy of the non-language score of the California Test of Mental Maturity was questioned. The appropriateness of recording an index of intellectual brightness for a child who is not a member of the cultural group upon which the test was standardized is doubted. 26-item bibliography.
THIS study attempts to contrast the effectiveness of directive and non-directive procedures in the guidance of college students in problems of vocational choice, as measured by changes in responses to Murray's Thematic Apperception 7est and by means of counselee ratings. Subjects The subjects in this experiment were volunteer students at Occidental College. An announcement was made on registration day that vocational counseling would be given to those students requesting it. Mimeographed notices to that effect were distributed to all persons registering. It was hoped to confine the selection of subjects to members of the Sophomore Class, in the interests of homogeneity, but an insufficient number applied within the time limits. For that reason, three freshmen, six juniors, two seniors, and three unclassified undergraduates were included as subjects. The remaining thirty-two subjects were sophomores, making a total of forty-six subjects. The subjects were to be divided into three sub-groups, one to receive non-directive counseling (hereafter designated as Group N); one to receive directive counseling (hereafter designated as Group D); and one group to serve as a control group and to receive no counseling during the course of the investigation (hereafter designated as Group C). It had been planned to equate these groups on the basis of pre-counseling Thematic Apperception Test (hereafter designated as T. A. T.) responses,
To gain greater standardization than is possible by manual means, a dual selective amplifier was designed and constructed with an especially cut set of test records for the administration of a blinker modification (i) of Thurstone 's 1943 Code Aptitude Test (2). This set-up enabled the experimenters to give instructions auditorially concerning Morse Code signals presented visually, the time intervals between instructions and code signals, as well as the speed at which the signals are sent, being held constant from one testing period to another. The basic principle of the dual selective amplifier is not new. However, since its applications to psychological research and testing are broader than for the particular test for which it was constructed, its design is given here. The particular constants used for this unit are given in Diagram 1, with a description of the essential parts included in Table I. Both diagram and table are self-explanatory, • : 7N7 7N7 CH3 DIAGRAM I. Wiring diagram for dual selective amplifier.
