En México los pinos constituyen el grupo de coníferas que sustenta la industria forestal, tanto en su aspecto maderable como no maderable; en este último sobresale el aprovechamiento de la resina. Se llevó a cabo la caracterización química de aceites esenciales y extractos de madera de Pinus devoniana y P. oocarpa, procedentes del bosque La Primavera, en el estado de Jalisco, mediante cromatografía de gases acoplada a espectrometría de masas (CG-EM). Los componentes mayoritarios (alfa y beta pinenos, limoneno y longifoleno) estuvieron presentes en todas las fracciones, aunque en proporciones diferentes. Destaca el alto contenido de pinenos en los extractos de madera de las especies estudiadas, aproximadamente 80 %, equivalente a casi 1 % de la madera seca. Asimismo, cada una de las fracciones tiene compuestos que les son propios; en cuanto a P. devoniana, su aceite esencial se caracteriza por el acetato de borneol y metileugenol; su extracto por contener pinocanfona, alfa-terpineno y acrilato de isobornilo. Respecto a P. oocarpa en su aceite esencial se identifica verbenol y algunos de sus derivados, así como (+)-ciclosativeno; su extracto tiene sabineno y anetol. El rendimiento del aceite esencial, con relación a la madera base seca fue de 0.25 % para P. devoniana y 0.32 % en P. oocarpa; los rendimientos de extractos resultaron semejantes en las dos especies, con un promedio de 1.24 %.
