A weak point of intravenous olfactometry using Alinamin ® (prosultiamine) solution is that angialgia and fluctuation in the pattern of increase in intranasal smell perception are frequently observed during the test. A previous study reported that modified intravenous olfactometry using a 12-ml solution (6 × dilution by adding 10ml of saline to original 10mg [2ml] of prosultiamine solution) injected for 40 s is helpful for avoidance of angialgia and smell fluctuation. The present study was conducted to determine if the modified intravenous olfactometry is generally useful in many smell centers. A total of 143 normosmic subjects in 15 smell centers participated in this study. They were divided into two groups at random and the original or modified intravenous olfactometry was applied. There were no statistically significant differences between these two groups for latency or duration time of smell sensation, or frequency of the angialgia or smell fluctuation. In conclusion, the modified intravenous olfactometry does not exceed the original test in preventing angialgia or smell fluctuation.
A few studies about laryngeal symptoms and sleep disorder in perennial allergic rhinitis patients have been demonstrated. In this paper, we investigated about postnasal drip, cough, foreign body sensation of the larynx (FBSL) and sleep disorder including the effi cacy of bepotastine besilate in perennial allergic rhinitis patients. In 28 perennial allergic rhinitis patients visited Fujita Health University Hospital and the associated facilities, peroral ingestion of bepotasitine besilate were given for 4 weeks. The scores of the paroxysmal sneeze, nasal discharge, nasal obstruction, cough and nasal fi ndings were signifi cantly improved 2 weeks and 4 weeks after bepotastine besilate ingestion. FBSL was signifi cantly improved 4 weeks later. The fi ndings of postnasal drip and arytenoidal edema showed the tendency to be diminished but not signifi cant. There were no signifi cant relationships between postnasal drip and cough or FBSL, while cough and FBSL had a significant relationship. According to this study, cough and FBSL in perennial allergic rhinitis patients were similar to the indulgent diagnostic criteria of perennial laryngeal allergy proposed in 2005. Sleep disorder was signifi cantly improved 4 weeks after bepotastine besilate ingestion.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
