Extracorporeally induced systemic hyperthermia (ESH) is indicated for patients with advanced cancer. Eight seven 87 cases of Stage IV cancer were treated by ESH. Thirty out of the 87 presented elevated values of tumor markers prior to ESH. In nine of these 30 cases, tumor marker values decreased significantly following ESH. A 26 year-old male with metastatic seminoma showed an HCG value of 9,000 units before treatment. The marker was decreased to 90 units following ESH. In some cases, AFP and CEA increased slightly right after ESH, and then decreased within several days.Tumor markers were thus considered to be good indicators in the treatment of ESH.
