La interpenetración dialéctica de la naturaleza humana y la gracia divina caracteriza la cultura católica del Barroco y la obra de Quevedo. Pero si en su obra satírica y festiva predominan los acercamientos discordantes («mundo al revés»), entre lo sagrado y lo profano, según denunciaron los enemigos del vate madrileño en el Tribunal de la justa venganza, en la poesía amorosa el movimiento es inverso: sacralización del amante y de su deseo a través de una retórica sagrada que se construye como transgresión de los valores senequistas y agustinianos de la obra doctrinal. La idolatría cortés del amor pasión y el tópico cancioneril del martirio de amor, objeto de escarnio en la «Premática del desengaño…» incluida en El Buscón, son renovados con la inserción audaz de conceptos morales y teológicos; pero a diferencia del efecto especulativo y argumentativo de las agudezas sacroprofanas de John Donne, la poesía amorosa de Quevedo se enfrenta a su obra moral y satírica a través de una retórica del delirio.
Lectura del soneto «Retirado en la paz de estos desiertos» de Quevedo, que acoge el estudio de Luisa López Grigera pero profundiza en el análisis estilístico y retórico, incluyendo la dispositio y el sistema vocálico, semántico y sintáctico.
