Gemeinhin gilt Friedrich Wolf als ein prononcierter Vertreter des sozialistischen Realismus. Sein Leben und sein Werk legen davon Zeugnis ab.Die Eindeutigkeit dieser Zuordnung birgt allerdings die Gefahr, den künstlerischen Werdegang von Beginn an nur mit der Perspektive auf das für die Standortbestimmung exemplarische Werk zu sehen. Unter dieser Voraussetzung werden dann die verschiedenen Entwicklungsphasen zu bloßen Vorstufen, sie erscheinen als noch nicht zur Reife gelangte Präludien, bei denen lediglich jene Momente interessieren, die auf die später erreichte Position hindeuten. Das Frühwerk Friedrich Wolfs wird damit in seiner Bedeutung und seiner Eigenständigkeit verzeichnet. Wird überhaupt einmal das Frühwerk in der wissenschaftlichen Literatur referiert -wie etwa bei Walther Pollatschek, 1 Werner Jehser 2 oder Werner Mittenzwei 3 -, so steht das dramatische Schaffen des Autors im Vordergrund; die Prosa, insbesondere der erste Roman, wird nur nebenher behandelt. Diesem doppelten Mangel versucht der vorliegende Aufsatz abzuhelfen.
