Sleep is one of the primary needs of the basic requirement for human survival. Sleep disorders can cause some effects in humans. It is estimated that 60-80% of workers with shift work system have impaired sleep quality. This results in a decrease in work productivity and an increase in the occurence of accidents. This study aimed to obtain the sleep quality of nurses in Prof. Dr. R. D. Kandou Hospital Manado in 2013. This was a descriptive and observational study by using questionnaires. The study population was nurses in the Neurology Department and the Emergency Department (ED) with samples of 52 people. The results showed that the subjective sleep qualities as perceived by the nurses themselves were as follows: good enough (44.23%) and poor (36.54%). Respondents that had sleep disturbance less than once a week were 30.77%, and respondents that had sleep disturbance 1-2 times a week were 59.62%. Most nurses (69.24%) did not use sleeping pills. Respondents that experienced some disruption of their activities during the day over the past 1 month as many as 1-2 times a week were 55.77%. Conclusion: The quality of sleep of night shift nurses in Prof. Dr. R. D Kandou Hospital Manado belonged to poor quality.
Peripheral neuropathy is a common condition of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients, which often remains undetected. We assessed the performance of stimulated skin wrinkling-eutectic mixture of local anesthetic (SSW-EMLA) test compared with brief peripheral neuropathy screening (BPNS) to detect HIV neuropathy. This is a cross-sectional study conducted in HIV-positive patients. A modified skin wrinkling grading was used to assess SSW-EMLA effect. BPNS-detectable neuropathy was assessed by a combination of neuropathy severity scoring scale (subjective) and objective method of sensory and tendon reflex examination. The SSW-EMLA test accuracy with reference to BPNS was assessed using sensitivity and specificity and predictive values. In a total of 99 HIV patients, 61.6% were males and the majority age group were between 30 and 40 years (52%). The neuropathy detection was SSW-EMLA test 36.4% versus BPNS 15.2% (P = .04). The sensitivity of SSW-EMLA test was 60.0% [95% confidence interval (95% CI) 34.5–81.7], specificity 67% (95% CI 63.3–3–71.7), and overall accuracy of 66.7% (95% CI 58.9–73.2).The SSW-EMLA test detected many more peripheral neuropathy cases than BPNS in HIV patients and has potential as an alternative test for screening for HIV neuropathy in resource-constraint hospitals in Indonesia.
Background: Adherence to medication is an important component of successful epilepsy treatment. However, the disease’s long-term treatment makes it difficult to achieve good adherence. This study aimed to assess the adherence level of anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) among adult epilepsy patients in Indonesia and its associated factors. Methods: We reviewed the medical records of epilepsy patients in a tertiary public hospital between September 2018 and August 2019. Subjects were patients who were electro-clinically diagnosed with any type of epilepsy, have been taken at least one AED for at least three months, have a record of Morisky medication adherence scale 8 items (MMAS-8) score, and aged 20 years old and above. The level of adherence was measured by the MMAS-8 Indonesian version. Results: We found 97 eligible subjects and the majority were males (56.7%), unemployed (69.1%), and aged ≥30 years old (55.7%). Most subjects (41.2%) showed a high adherence level. The remaining 30.9% and 27.8% had a moderate and low adherence level respectively. Conclusions: This study reveals that high AEDs adherence is associated with being male, younger than 30 years of age, received monotherapy instead of polytherapy, and no memory impairment. A further investigation related to the reason why these factors play roles in the Indonesian setting is important to design appropriate strategies to improve AEDs adherence of epilepsy patients.
