Water Resource Recovery Facility (WRRF) can be source of odorous gases. We analyzed the emission and dispersion of hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S), odor indicator, produced during the anaerobic treatment of wastewaters, using WATER9 and AERMOD models for two distinct events: August 2013 and February-March 2014. Data from two WRRF in Brazil were used to feed the model and a statistical data validation was performed, followed by an evaluation of model results regarding H2S emission and dispersion. Daily peak events and averages over the two periods were calculated. Results show a good performance from the model in comparison to the observations. Moreover, odor plumes typically reached 2-4 km from their sources and they may be strongly affected by atmospheric stability/instability conditions in the events analyzed and, in general, only the residences at the vicinity of WRRF were affected by the pollutant odor. Finally, the methodology presented showed to be feasible and realistic for purposes of WRRF planning and management.

RESUMOO tratamento anaeróbio de águas residuárias pode produzir elevadas concentrações de sulfeto de hidrogênio (H2S), substância que apresenta forte odor, além de ser corrosivo e tóxico. Alguns dos métodos existentes para o controle do H2S demandam elevado custo de implantação e operação e, portanto, não são adotados. Dessa forma, o planejamento adequado da instalação de uma estação de tratamento de esgoto (ETE) pode auxiliar na prevenção do impacto e de possíveis problemas com a população. Modelos matemáticos de dispersão atmosférica podem ser aplicados previamente para verificar o alcance do poluente e, portanto, subsidiar a definição do local mais adequado para instalação de uma ETE. Dessa forma, o objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar a dispersão atmosférica do H2S proveniente de uma unidade anaeróbia de tratamento de águas residuárias localizada em um bairro rural do município de Itajubá, MG, Brasil. Para isso, foi aplicado o modelo gaussiano AERMOD utilizando-se dados reais da taxa de emissão do poluente no reator anaeróbio, além de informações meteorológicas e geofísicas (relevo e uso do solo). Como resultado das simulações verificou-se que a pluma de odor foi orientada pelo relevo e se concentrou nas proximidades da unidade de tratamento, limitando o impacto ao bairro rural. O vento também exerceu influência direta na orientação do H2S para o período 1. No entanto, para o período 2, não se verificou a mesma tendência. The present study aims to investigate the water balance in conventional and green roofs and also to monitor the development of peanut grass (Arachis repens Handro), relating the type of vegetation cover or not with its water retention capacity and, consequently, to obtain the coefficient of runoff for each scenario tested. The scenarios tested were: (1) conventional collection surface with fiber cement tile, (2) green roof structure with substrate and no plant, and (3) planted green roof. The rains incident on the roof were obtained for the city of Itajubá, in Minas Gerais, by the curve of i-d-f with 5min of duration and 5years of return period according to the recommendation of NBR 10844 (ABNT,1989). The volumes of storm water runoff and drained from the bottom of the roofs studied were collected in calibrated graduated containers. It was concluded that: the peanut grass showed satisfactory development and high recovery capacity; the peanut grass took only 1½ month to cover the entire roof; the coefficient of runoff of the green roof for intense rainy season was on average 0.569 and in the dry season it was 0.003. While the conventional roof presented average surface runoff coefficient of 0.995 for the rainy season and 0.901 for the dry season; the component of the green roof that contributed most to the rainwater retention was the substrate. Therefore, attention should be paid to the choice of substrate so that it can adequately grow the plant, retain rainwater and not contaminate the bottom drainage water of the roof that can be used for less noble uses.
