Discusses the training of library and information professionals in Africa, and future development. Argues that library and information services (LIS) training in Africa must take into consideration existing conditions and wider society needs. Courses offered must be tailored to suit conditions of Africa's information structure and needs. Also the training offered must be suitable and effective enough to allow trainees to comprehend it properly and apply it appropriately to their actual working environments. Concludes that there is a need to strengthen the existing library schools in Africa. Coordination and cooperation at national and regional levels are suggested as part of the solution.
This paper is an attempt to document the preservation of information resources in academic libraries. After the introductory part the paper begins by explaining the rationale for preserving information resources in academic libraries. The preservation of both print and non-print information resources were well explored. Factors for considerations in preserving information resources like policy, fund, skilled labour, infrastructure and management support were explained so that they could be simply understood. The study suggests that universities offering library science programs should consider making the subject of preservation compulsory so that every librarian could have skills on how to preserve the library information resources. The study further recommends that modern preservation strategies need to be adopted by all libraries in order to safely guide the information resources for current and future generation.
Problem Statement: Libraries as public information agencies act as catalysts that provide reliable information that empowers people in making the right decision in terms of development plans put forward by various sectors. However, studies on how and where the society, access, and the use of relevant information that empower them to contribute positively in these sectors are inadequately reported in scholarly literatures. Purpose: This study in particular reports the role of libraries in community empowerment and the challenges faced by libraries in the dissemination of information for community empowerment. Method: This study is a scoping and a literature review of the role of libraries in community empowerment. The study adopted Arksey and O’ Malley framework. Google scholar, JSTOR, Ebscohost, Emerald insight, fullfreepdf, Eric, Research4life databases, and Taylor & Francis were used as the main sources of information. Results: The result revealed that libraries provide free internet access and information resources. Libraries also act as information acquisition centre, community empowerment programs as well as a centre for building capacity, and learning support. The study also revealed that job dissatisfaction among library staff, inadequate facilities, lack of commitment, lack of teamwork and poor relationships among staff, insufficient knowledge and skills among library staff are some of the challenges libraries have to face as an effective provision of information services. The present study examined the preservation practices for information resources in seven public university libraries in Tanzania. Convenient and purposive sampling techniques were used to recruit library staff and library directors respectively to participate in the study. Data were collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The quantitative data obtained from the questionnaires were analysed using the Statistical Product and Service Solution (version 20) software while the qualitative data from the interviews were analysed using the thematic data analysis method. Regarding the effective preservation approaches for information resources, the study established that binding, digitization, migration, and emergency preparedness plans were highly cited. The following were the recommended preservation approaches for adoption in public university libraries: digitization, refreshing, proper shelving, and cleanliness of all library areas, migration, technology preservation, and binding. From the findings, it was concluded that public university libraries have a variety of preservation approaches for both print and digital information resources. The study recommends that policymakers and the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology should train librarians in skills that they can apply in preserving information resources using modern technologies.
