To paraphrase John Donne, no university is an island to itself—and no university department either. Welcome or not, change is being forced on Canadian universities as a whole and on university departments, with the direction of that change determined more by interests external to the universities and to university departments than debate in curriculum committees often acknowledges. Notwithstanding academic freedom, the interests of departments, and even the teaching and research interests of faculty, issues of curriculum have increasingly become the concerns of government and marketplace rather than the concerns of the professoriate alone. Owing to their centrality in higher education, English studies have closer ties to these various interests than do many other university programs. Heather Murray quite correctly describes English as 'a synecdoche for the humanities and even higher education more generally' (Murray, 'Delivering,' 18).
