No abstract

A new plant species from Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, Brazil, Aniba subbullata, is described and illustrated. Its putative relationships within the genus are discussed, and an identification key is provided for distinguishing it from previously known species in that state. We also provide illustrations and comments on micromorphological features of leaves of this new species, particularly of the abaxial surface, comparing them to those of congeneric species and showing that they are useful for its recognition.

During a floristic study, carried out in the Parque Estadual Turístico do Alto Ribeira (PETAR), in São Paulo state, Southeastern Brazil, Peperomia bernhardiana, a poorly known species of Atlantic Forest, has been collected. We present an emended description of the species based on the recently collected specimens and provide color photographs of fresh specimens. We verified the need to designate a neotype for this name and propose one to substitute the destroyed holotype.

With the aim of recognizing and identifying both fertile and sterile specimens of Lauraceae from the Brazilian state of Bahia, we analyzed the leaf venation pattern of 56 species belonging to 14 genera (excluding Ocotea), 30 of them described and illustrated for the first time. A dichotomous identification key was built from a matrix of 12 venation characters and 36 states, which allowed to distinguish the taxa.

With the aim of recognizing and identifying both fertile and sterile specimens of Ocotea from the Brazilian state of Bahia, we analyzed the leaf venation pattern of 55 species, 21 of them being described and illustrated for the first time. A dichotomous identification key was built from a matrix of 12 venation characters and 36 states, which allowed to distinguish the taxa.

In this study, we analysed leaf cuticle characters of 61 collections from 13 Cryptocarya species recognised in Brazil, of which 11 are considered endemic, and one Costa Rican collection of an unidentified species. Most Cryptocarya species studied have predominantly undulate anticlinal epidermal walls on the adaxial surface, butterfly-shaped stomatal ledges and the stomatal complex protruding and arching over the stomatal slit with a rim resembling two kidneys facing each other (reniform rims). Analysis of a matrix of six leaf cuticle qualitative characters and 19 states, most of them illustrated here for the first time by light and scanning electron microscopy, allowed us to distinguish these taxa. Based on these characters, two Brazilian Cryptocarya species can be easily separated from the others by their predominantly straight anticlinal epidermal walls adaxially and the almost flat surface appearance of the stomatal complex.

Based on a recent collection, we present the rediscovery of Peperomia crypticola C. DC., a rare species only known from eastern Minas Gerais, Southeastern Brazil. This species was now found in western Rio de Janeiro, more than 200 km apart and more than hundred years after the original description. An emended description, distribution map, color photographs of the fresh collection and comparison of the species with the closely related Peperomia lanceolatopeltata C. DC. are presented.
