Neste estudo exploratório, usando dados secundários, focamos em uma área do litoral sul de Santa Catarina que abrange as lagoas de Imaruí, Mirim, Ibiraquera, Garopaba e seus entornos, com 99 sítios arqueológicos registrados, principalmente sambaquis e Guarani. Utilizando datações, Sistemas de Informação Geográfica (SIG) e geoestatística, foram realizadas análises de cluster e polígonos de Thiessen-Voronoi para analisar padrões de ocupação regional. Identificamos padrões distintos para as populações sambaquieiras e Guarani: enquanto as populações sambaquieiras estão distribuídas ao longo das lagoas e margens do rio d’Una, os sítios Guarani estão concentrados nos terraços antigos entre o rio d’Una e a costa. Esta modelagem inicial abre espaço para explorar as diferentes formas de organização social e territorialidade desses grupos.
A modelagem preditiva arqueológica é uma ferramenta de resolução pragmática de problemas relacionados com a localização de sítios arqueológicos, relacionada principalmente com a diminuição de custos e aumento na eficiência de atividades de survey. Há uma preponderância na utilização de dois métodos distintos de modelagem preditiva: uma abordagem chamada de dedutiva e outra, indutiva. Neste artigo, iremos discutir aspectos destes dois tipos de técnicas de modelagem preditiva, aplicando os dois métodos mais recorrentes na literatura em uma área piloto na região sul de Santa Catarina, a bacia do Rio Capivaras. Os modelos preditivos foram utilizados para avaliar a distribuição espacial de um tipo particular de sítio na região, caracterizado pela presença de uma mancha circular de solo bastante escuro com materiais líticos e resíduos de atividades de combustão. Com objetivo de avaliar criticamente os diferentes métodos de modelagem, foram realizados alguns testes comparativos, demonstrando pontos positivos e negativos de cada método.
