In the area of black-box identication, NARMAX models are of great interest. The main diculty faced when working with such models is the selection of the correct structure to represent the underlying system in the data. Orthogonal Least Squares (OLS) methods are widely used for this task, however, there are systems with a high degree of non-linearity and long term dependencies, which makes the use of traditional OLS methods computationally impracticable. In this sense, this paper studies the use of Multi-Gene Genetic Programing (MGGP) together with the traditional OLS method to increase the search space and turn the structure selection practicable for average performance computer. It is shown that, in real-life problem data, the algorithm can nd better models than previous works' models. The MGGP found a model for a hydraulic pumping system with a better one-step-ahead prediction error (0:058 mlc2 against 0:070 mlc2) using PEM technique and better free-run simulation error (0:997 mlc2 against 1:120 mlc2) using SEM technique. The MGGP found a model with such a degree of non-linearity and maximum input-output lags that totalizes 142505 candidate terms for traditional OLS analysis, which is impracticable for average performance computers.
This paper explores the structure selection problem in NARX models excited by nonideal input signals, or with poor excitation properties, in output-error problems. It is proposed to use Multi-objective Genetic Algorithms together with Extended Least Squares algorithm. Two different approaches are used for these algorithms: the prediction error minimization and the free run simulation error minimization, both using the reduction of the amount of selected regressors as a second objective. The results show that these approaches have equivalent performances and are superior to the traditional FROE technique's performance in smooth input problems. While these techniques find the ideal model from 75 to 100% of executions in Monte Carlo simulations, the FROE technique finds from 0 to 14%. Moreover, due to its lower computational cost, it is advised to use the genetic approach with prediction error minimization aproach.
The structure selection problem is an essential step in the system identification process. In this work, we seek to model a 15 kW hydraulic pumping system, in static and dynamic regime, using polynomial NARX/NARMAX (Nonlinear AutoRegressive Moving Average with eXogenous inputs) representations. To carry out the structure selection task, an evolutionary MGGP (Multi-Gene Genetic Programming) algorithm is implemented to minimize three objectives, namely: i. the error of the model's static curve, ii. the one step ahead prediction error (dynamic regime error), and iii. the number of regressors in the model. To select the fittest individual in Pareto (decision making process), the results under static and dynamic (validation data) conditions are taken into account. The selected NARX model has 25 regressors, with a static error of 0.0355 [mlc 2 ], a dynamic error (training data) of 1.349 [mlc 2 ] and a dynamic error (validation data) of 1.208 [mlc 2 ]. The NARMAX model selected has 19 process regressors and 2 noise regressors, with a static error of 0.0479 [mlc 2 ], dynamic error (training data) of 1.869 [mlc 2 ] and dynamic error (validation data) of 1.238 [mlc 2 ]. The models found present satisfactory results in dynamic and static regimes when compared to other works (over the same database). It demonstrates that the multi-objective MGGP is a promissing tool for selecting structures.
