In de beschreven relatie is sprake van een symbiose, die opgevat wordt als een pathogene illusie. In de biologie wordt het concept symbiose gebruikt als een tweezijdige vorm van afhankelijkheid. Deze definitie is beter geschikt om een pathologische objectrelatie te omschrijven dan een ontwikkelingsfase. De 'symbiotische illusie' bestaat uit een pact, waarin liefde ingeruild wordt voor totale toewijding en afhankelijkheid. Deze narcistische band verhindert separatie en individuatie en resulteert in een identificatie met het imago van een ouder met buitensluiting van de andere. Deze symbiotische illusie wordt vaker gezien tussen een moeder en haar dochter. Bij moeders en zonen resulteert deze eerder in perversies en homoseksualiteit.
