Résumé Nous avons fait l'hypothèse que le schème empirique d'un objet s'édifie au cours de l'enfance et obéit à deux lois ; d'une part il privilégie une orientation de l'objet par rapport au plan fronto-parallèle, d'autre part il requiert la présence de certains détails caractéristiques de cet objet. Divers objets familiers, concrets : maisonnettes, poupée, tasses, ont été présentés sur un plateau tournant. Après avoir vu un objet sous tous ses aspects, l'enfant choisissait parmi huit photographies celle qui ressemblait le plus au stimulus. Les photos d'un objet ont pu ainsi être classées en fonction des choix des sujets. L'expérience a porté sur 320 enfants, garçons et filles de 5, 6, 7 et 9 ans (80 par âge). Il est apparu que : 1) Les choix ne se font pas au hasard et certains aspects sont nettement préférés à d'autres ; 2) Certains éléments : anse de tasse, visage de poupée, fenêtres de maison sont les critères essentiels du choix ; 3) En dehors de ce facteur, l'orientation peut jouer ; plus l'enfant est âgé, plus grande est l'importance qu'il y attache. A 9 ans une photo qui montre à la fois deux faces d'une maison est nettement préférée à celle qui ne montre qu'une face ; 4) La tendance génétique semble aller dans le sens d'une recherche de l'information la plus complète, dût-elle par là même devenir plus équivoque.
