Os descobrimentos do século XVI, que ensejaram a montagem de impérios ultramarinos e o estabelecimento de rotas mercantis, foram responsáveis pela acumulação e divulgação de informações sobre a fauna e a flora americanas, freqüentemente diversas daquelas do Velho Mundo. O processo de colonização e conquista da América permitiu a ampliação do conhecimento que os europeus tinham sobre os produtos da natureza, possibilitou a introdução de espécies em ambiente distinto do original e a adaptação dos europeus aos trópicos. Estes considerados um lugar inóspi-to, de acordo com a herança de saber da antigüidade clássica.Este conhecimento tornou-se imprescindível para garantir a permanência das novas sociedades que se constituíram a partir do processo de colonização. Controlar as informações desde as condições de navegação até as características das diversas regiões, identificando suas peculiaridades fí-sicas e climáticas, descobrindo novas espécies da flora e da fauna, observando as doenças endêmicas e os tratamentos realizados a partir dos produtos oferecidos pela natureza, foram práticas que possibilitaram o estabelecimento das novas sociedades no continente americano, desde o início de sua ocupação pelos portugueses e espanhóis, seguidos pelos franceses, ingleses e neerlandeses. Vale sublinhar que esse conhecimento era produzido por homens com formações diversas: cosmógrafos, teólogos, filósofos naturais, médicos, negociantes e missionários.

A partir de alguns textos escritos pelos cosmógrafos do Reino, entre os séculos XVI e XVIII, em Portugal, pretendemos evidenciar as bases técnicas e científicas que possibilitaram a expansão marítima europeia destacando as relações entre elas e a construção e o uso dos instrumentos matemáticos utilizados na navegação oceânica. Nosso objetivo, além de sublinhar os conteúdos científicos relacionados aos artefatos utilizados para as medições, é também verificar como a ciência e o conhecimento adquirem significado prático, estratégico e simbólico no contexto da expansão ultramarina de Portugal.
Esta sentença foi estampada em 1563, em Goa, por ninguém menos que Garcia de Orta em seus Colóquios dos simples e drogas he cousas mediçinais da Índia. O conde de Ficalho, editor de Orta para a Academia das Ciências de Lisboa em fins do século XIX, houve por bem reforçar o veredito, anotando no pé da página um comentário seco sobre essa passagem: “Reflexão perfeitamente sentida, e que ainda hoje tem cabimento”. Esse desinteresse, essa falta de curiosidade a respeito das “cousas que há na terra” são parte fundamental da legenda negra que envolveu – e ainda envolve – muito do que já se disse sobre os projetos coloniais dos impérios ibéricos. Os próprios portugueses não fizeram pouca coisa para disseminá-la, e a narrativa da decadência, da superstição religiosa e da irracionalidade se estabeleceu com toda força na época do reformismo ilustrado, acompanhando todo o século XIX e as primeiras décadas do XX.
