Stabilization of ferritic stainless steel ASTM 409, for use in automobile exhaust systems, is increasingly in demand, due to higher exhaust gas temperatures. Ti is one of the most commonly used elements. However, high concentrations cause problems during steel casting; however, stabilization with Ti and Nb represents a good alternative. The present study aims to investigate the effect of adding Nb on the microstructure, texture, and forming properties of Ti-stabilized ferritic steels. The results demonstrated that Nb-addition leads to a more deformed microstructure after hot rolling with the strongest {110}〈001〉 Goss component. In the deformed state, the steels displayed the α-fiber, but 11CrTi+Nb steel showed a more intense γ-fiber. After annealing, Nb-addition led to an increase in the γ-fiber and in average normal coefficient of anisotropy (R). Thus, it was demonstrated that the dual stabilization (Ti+Nb) of the ferritic steel was responsible for improving the recrystallization texture and forming proprieties.
INCLUSIONS ANALYSISINFERRITIC STAINLESS STEEL TYPE 409Abstract Ferritic stainless steel 409 is sensible to a large amount of inclusions. To determine the origin of inclusions is not an easy work. Knowledge about the production process and a good characterization method of inclusions are important points on the identification and how to solve quality problems. This work has the objective to characterizer inclusion on the AISI 409 stainless steel grade in all production steps on the melt shop by microscopy method and microprobe. Samples of the melt steel and slag were obtained in each step of production. Chemical composition of steel and slag were checked by x-ray energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS). The inclusions were analyzed by optical microscopy, and SEM-EDS. Results showed the chemical composition is modified according to the treatment in each process and the cleanness is effected after Ti addition at Ladle Furnace and at tundish during the continuous casting.
NON METALLIC INCLUSIONS IN FERRITIC STAINLESS STEEL WITH TITANIUM AND CALCIUM ADITIONS IN THE LADLE FURNACE AbstractTitanium is added in ferritic stainless steels to improve corrosion resistance and to stabilize the ferritic structure. Titanium losses by oxidation are also common due to the oxygen affinity in the molten steel. Inclusions formed by titanium oxidation can cause nozzle clogging and defects in the final product. Inclusions with lower melting point have showed less detrimental to the steel properties and it has been reached with calcium treatment. This work had the objective to evaluate the chemical composition of the inclusions on the stainless steel type 409 after titanium additions in the Ladle Furnace and the effect of the calcium addition in the inclusions behavior. Samples of the melt steel were obtained in baths with and without Ca-Si additions in the Ladle Furnace process. The inclusions were analyzed by SEM-EDS.
