A study was made o f the labeled iodinated amino acids and the spécifie activities of organic iodine in the thyroid and blood of 14 goitrous euthyroid patients of the Uele endémie area (Africa). Partial thyroidectomy was per formed three to ten days after administration of I'^'. The total iodine content of the thyroid was in the normal range, but the concentration of iodine per gram was reduced to about 25 per cent. Although the thyroidal uptake of I"' was in creased in ail the patients, the level of plasma PBI"' was low in some cases (0.05 per cent of the dose per liter at twentyfour hours), and much higher in others (0.44 per cent). In the 8 "low PBP^'" patients the isotopic equilibrium between the thyroidal and extrathyroidal organic iodine pools had not been reached seven days after administration of I"', whereas in tho 6 "high PBP^'" patients the spécifie activity of the organic iodine was two to seven times higher in the blood than in the thyroid gland. In the first group, there was a slowing down of the hormonal sécrétion rate. In the second group, the high PBP" levels suggest the existence of an iodine pool with a fast turnover, functionally différent from the rest of the thyroidal iodine stores. Chromato graphic analysis of thyroid tissue after hydrolysis showed an increase of the MIT^'/DIT'" ratio and a decrease in the labeled iodothyronine fraction. This distribution was probably the resuit of a diminution in the rate of transfer of I"' into the more heavily iodinated compounds. From this study it appears that besides an increased thyroidal iodine uptake, severe iodine deficiency in duces several abnormalities in the synthesis and excrétion of the thyroid hormone.R ECENT expérimental work (1,2) has shown that a prolonged iodine deficient diet induces modifications in the iodinated aminoacid con tent of the thyroid gland. This paper deals with a statistical study of the spatial relationships between the acrocentric chromosomes in men and in women as can be inferred from the analysis of metaphase figures. This analysis confirms the hypothesis that the acrocentric chromosomes are not randomly situated and shows as a new fact that this effect is considerably more striking in women than in men. This might account for a part of the prominent role attributed to the mother in many cases of mongolism.
