En prenant Médée – le personnage et la pièce – comme point de départ, il s’agira de réfléchir à la mise en scène de cette notion qui selon Corneille suppose d’être rendue visible pour que le héros tragique soit admirable aux yeux du public. Nous montrerons comment, à partir de ces réflexions, le dramaturge développe une conception singulière de ce qui fait la dignité de la figure royale. Nous tâcherons ainsi de voir Médée d’un nouvel œil, non comme l’archétype du déchaînement passionnel, mais comme un premier modèle cornélien de l’extériorisation de la grandeur d’âme du personnage tragique sur la scène du XVII e siècle.
