University of California Press is collaborating with JSTOR to digitize, preserve and extend access to California Studies in Classical Antiquity.A pictorial complement, in grace and delicacy, to these lines by Sappho may be found in an Attic red-figured kalpis by the Yale Oinochoe Painter, now located in the Hearst State Monument at San Simeon, California.2 The small3 vase is decorated with tongues on the lip and single bands of meander and cross-hatching above and below the figural scene. This scene is of three girls picking fruit from a central, widely branching tree. One young woman stands far to the left of the heavily laden tree; immediately to the left a second girl sits on a thakos4 or a box; a third companion stands to the right. Between the tree and the third figure rests a basket; within it are white objects. The tree is decked with faintly preserved white leaves and round fruit, several of which are shown dropping between the two upright figures (pl. 1).
