Wound management in primary care is recognized as the remit of nurses. Until quite recently, however, wound products had to be prescribed by GPs, a prescription collected by the nurse or patient, and the products dispensed by a pharmacist. This has changed, and wound products made up the majority of the items that were first listed as items district nurse prescribers could prescribe. However, several years later, there still remains an issue with accessing the products in a timely fashion, because of the delay in having products dispensed by the pharmacist.
