Brain γ-glutamyltransferase levels were determined in the cortex, cerebellum, medulla
and mid-brain of 14 ethanol-fed and 10 control rabbits. In the ethanol-fed animals, brain
γ-glutamyltransferase activity was reduced. This reduction was more pronounced with 3 than with
6 months ethanol feeding, and significantly reduced γ-glutamyltransferase activity was observed at
each brain site when rabbits fed ethanol for 3 months were compared with non-ethanol-fed
controls with similar calorie intake.
Possible neuropharmacological implications are considered.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
