An international project developed, quality-tested, and determined isotope-δ values of 19 new organic reference materials (RMs) for hydrogen, carbon, and nitrogen stable isotope-ratio measurements, in addition to analyzing pre-existing RMs NBS 22 (oil), IAEA-CH-7 (polyethylene foil), and IAEA-600 (caffeine). These new RMs enable users to normalize measurements of samples to isotope-δ scales. The RMs span a range of δ 2 H VSMOW-SLAP values from-210.8 to +397.0 mUr or ‰, for δ 13 C VPDB-LSVEC from-40.81 to +0.49 mUr, and for δ 15 N Air from-5.21 to +61.53 mUr. Many of the new RMs are amenable to gas and liquid chromatography. The RMs include triads of isotopically contrasting caffeines, C 16 nalkanes, n-C 20-fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs), glycines, and L-valines, together with polyethylene powder and string, one n-C 17-FAME, a vacuum oil (NBS 22a) to replace NBS 22 oil, and a 2 H-enriched vacuum oil. Eleven laboratories from 7 countries used multiple analytical approaches and instrumentation for 2-point isotopic calibrations against international primary measurement standards. The use of reference waters in silver tubes allowed direct calibration of δ 2 H values of organic materials against isotopic reference waters following the principle of identical treatment. Bayesian statistical analysis yielded the mean values reported here. New RMs are numbered from USGS61 through USGS78, in addition to NBS 22a. Due to exchangeable hydrogen, amino acid RMs currently are recommended only for carbon-and nitrogen-isotope measurements. Some amino acids contain 13 C and carbon-bound organic 2 Henrichments at different molecular sites to provide RMs for potential site-specific isotopic analysis in future studies.

Many field experiments have indicated that litter decomposition in semi-arid areas may be partly or fully controlled by photodegradation. We devised a study to test our hypothesis that light exposure makes plant litter more degradable. Dry, senescent, aboveground plant litter from Miscanthus x giganteus was exposed to light including ultraviolet (UV) radiation for various lengths of time from 0 to 289 days. Weight loss was measured after exposure and appeared to be modest and did not increase with time of exposure. The litter of the longest and shortest exposure time as well as controls were then incubated with soil and moisture for 35 days and CO 2 and N 2 O production were measured. The longest exposed litter degraded much faster than any other treatment during incubation with moisture, about twice as fast as the unexposed control. The shortest exposed however, degraded only slightly faster than the unexposed control. This suggests that increasing litter degradability is a more important mechanism for photodegradation than direct light-induced mass loss. N 2 O production from decomposition of the exposed litter was high in the beginning, suggesting that nitrogen may be released quickly. The mechanism is probably that light exposure leaves the nitrogen in plant litter easily available to microbial utilisation upon wetting. Such a mechanism might play an important role for nutrient cycling in semi-arid areas.

Stable isotope analysis of organic materials for their hydrogen ((2)H), carbon ((13)C), nitrogen ((15)N) or oxygen ((18)O) isotopic composition using continuous flow isotope ratio mass spectrometry (CF-IRMS) is an increasingly used tool in forensic chemical analysis. (2)H isotopic analysis can present a huge challenge, especially when dealing with exhibits comprising exchangeable hydrogen such as human scalp hair. However, to yield forensic data that are fit for purpose, analysis of the (2)H isotopic composition of the same homogeneous human hair sample by any laboratory worldwide must yield the same isotopic composition within analytical uncertainty. This paper presents longitudinal (2)H isotope data for four human hair samples of different provenance, measured by three different laboratories whose sample preparation was based on a two-stage H exchange equilibration method. Although each laboratory employed varying means to comply with the generic features of the sample preparation protocol such as the (2)H isotopic composition of exchange waters or drying down of samples prior to analysis, within each laboratory the Principle of Identical Treatment (P.I.T.) was applied for each individual experiment. Despite the variation in materials and procedures employed by the three laboratories, repeatable and reproducible 'true' (2)H isotope values (δ(2)H(hair,true)) were determined by each laboratory for each of the four stock samples of human scalp hair. The between-laboratory differences for obtained δ(2)H(hair,true) values ranged from 0.1 to 2.5 ‰. With an overall 95% confidence interval of ±2.8 ‰, these differences were not significantly different, which suggests that the general method of two-stage exchange equilibration carried out at ambient temperature is suitable for accurately and reproducibly determining 'true' δ(2)H-values for hair and other proteins provided that certain key conditions are met.

Drug profiling, or the ability to link batches of illicit drugs to a common source or synthetic route, has long been a goal of law enforcement agencies. Research in the past decade has explored drug profiling with isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS). This type of research can be limited by the use of substances seized by police, of which the provenance is unknown. Fortunately, however, some studies in recent years have been carried out on drugs synthesized in-house and therefore of known history. In this study, 18 MDMA samples were synthesized in-house from aliquots of the same precursor by three common reductive amination routes and analyzed for 13C, 15N, and 2H isotope abundance using IRMS. For these three preparative methods, results indicate that 2H isotope abundance data is necessary for discrimination by synthetic route. Furthermore, hierarchical cluster analysis using 2H data on its own or combined with 13C and/or 15N provides a statistical means for accurate discrimination by synthetic route.
