Au cours de l'histoire, les sociétés humaines ont profondément modifié les espaces boisés. L' écologie historique constitue une approche intégrativep ermettant de reconstruirel es anciens paysages forestiers et de retracer l'évolution de pratiques forestières anciennes. Elle repose sur des disciplines multiples et souvent complémentaires.La documentation historique constitue, àe lle seule, une ressource extrêmement diversifiée. Les archives forestières proprement dites apparaissent au bas Moyen ge (XIV e -XV e siècles), avec la mise en place en France des maîtrises royales des Eaux et Forêts. Elles témoignent d'une régle-mentation croissante, qui trouves on aboutissement dans la grande réformation menée par Colbert (1661-1669) et l'ordonnance de Saint-Germain-en-Layed e1 669. Cette administration vise à atteindreu ne soutenabilité de la production forestièree ts et raduit, àl 'échelle du massif,p ar la planification des interventions et des mises en réserve. Cette politique forestières 'accompagne d'une réglementation croissante des usages accordés aux populations (Boutefeu, 2005). Avant cette période, les sources ecclésiastiques révèlent de précieuses informations locales, notamment relatives aux droits d'affouage, de panage et de pâturage de ces institutions ou des populations locales. Cependant, si la documentation historique est riche et diversifiée, elle reste en partie lacunairee tn 'est pas toujours spatialisée.Le recours àl 'archéologie forestièrep ermet d'identifier les vestiges d'activités anciennes qui sont conservés sous forme de microreliefs. Ces derniers sont révélés avec précision par la méthode de télédétection par lidar (light detection and ranging)e ni mportant développement depuis les années 2000 (Georges-Leroy et al.,2 011). Cette technologie utilise un laser pouvant pénétrer à l'intérieur du couvert forestier et ainsi atteindrel es ol, ce qui permet, entrea utres, l'obtention d'un MNT (modèle numérique de terrain) àf orte résolution (quelques dizaines de cm). Outrel a mise en évidence de bâtis anciens, ces microreliefs peuvent traduirel ap résence d'anciennes limites parcellaires, de réseaux viaires, d'aménagements industriels (charbonnières, fours de verriers, etc.) ou encored 'aménagements cynégétiques (mottes àc onils pour l'élevage des lapins, parcs àg ibier,e tc.) qui sont autant d'éléments de compréhension de l'occupation et de la gestion ancienne des forêts.Au-delà des microreliefs préservés àl eur surface, les sols sont durablement marqués dans toute leur épaisseur par les activités humaines passées.
