En este artículo se analizan los relatos sobre la integración europea de los principales partidos comunistas de Europa Occidental: España, Francia, Italia y Portugal. El objetivo del trabajo se centra en el estudio de las similitudes y diferencias de dichos actores políticos en la percepción del proceso de integración desde sus inicios a comienzos de la década de 1950 hasta la de 1970. Se parte de la hipótesis de que la actitud ante Europa de los distintos partidos comunistas está relacionada con un tronco ideológico común, pero también con las respectivas políticas nacionales y con la influencia que el propio desarrollo comunitario ejerció sobre estas. Mediante una metodología comparativa que analiza la actitud de los partidos comunistas ante los distintos hitos y fases del proceso integrador se obtienen resultados y conclusiones que ponen de relieve la tensión entre ideología y estrategia política como factor explicativo relevante del comportamiento político de los partidos comunistas de España, Francia, Italia y Portugal ante la integración europea.
La política mantenida por el Partido Comunista de España (PCE) ante las Comunidades Europeas hasta los años finales del franquismo estuvo marcada por la superposición de diferentes actitudes ante el proceso de integración europea. Los distintos condicionantes, tanto externos como internos, que explican dichas actitudes son analizados en este artículo siguiendo la evolución de su recorrido. Este se inició con un absoluto rechazo de las Comunidades Europeas, fundamentado en el total alineamiento del PCE con la política internacional de la URSS, pasó posteriormente por una interpretación menos severa, pero aún muy crítica, en la que el Mercado Común se entendía como un instrumento de carácter antisocial perjudicial para los intereses españoles y desembocó, por fin, desde finales de los sesenta, en una actitud flexible ante la integración comunitaria que supuso un completo viraje en su política europea.

Desde el punto de vista teórico y metodológico se adopta la perspectiva de la creciente europeización de la vida política española derivada del proceso integrador y su posible influencia en dicha trayectoria. Las conclusiones permiten comprobar que la europeización fue un factor condicionante no solo para la política europea del PCE, sino también para sus políticas y estrategias estrictamente nacionales. La imbricación entre la política europea y la política nacional del comunismo español originó, en una primera etapa, un europeísmo crítico que posteriormente, tras el Tratado de Maastricht, evolucionó hacia posiciones euroescépticas.
